Wishing for the RSV-3CE

I love the RSV-2CE but I wish it could have done more in updating the original RSV-CE

Here are some verses I wish it could have changed;
Sadly, some of these changes already appear on the footnotes!! :mad:

Throughout the Four Gospels
“Amen I say to you” (Matthew, Mark, Luke) and “Amen, amen I say to you” (John)
instead of “Truly I say to you” and “Truly, truly I say to you” respectively

Throughout the Greek texts
“Alleluia”
instead of “Hallelujah”

John 8:58
“…before Abraham was, I AM.”
instead of “…before Abraham was, I am.”

John 13:19;18:5,6,8
“…I AM”
instead of “…I am he”

Genesis 12:3; 18:18; 22:18; 26:4; 28:14
“…of the earth shall be blessed.”
instead of “…of the earth shall bless themselves.”

Psalm 45:6
“Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever…”
instead of “Your divine throne endures for ever and ever…”

Genesis 9:20
“Noah began to till the soil and planted a vineyard.”
instead of “Noah was the first tiller of the soil. He planted a vineyard.”

Throughout the Gospels when Greek word is ραββι
“Rabbi”
instead of “Master”

Matthew 19:5,6
“…one flesh.”
instead of “…one.”

1 Corinthians 6:16
“…one flesh.”
instead of “…one body.”

I also wish it could have references and be sold in high quality leather;
similar to the Cambridge University Press Bibles

You ask for too much! 😃
 
Some of these are perfectly valid translations.

Translating the Bible (or any other extended literary work, for that matter) is not a science, but an art.

Frequently, there are several acceptable ways of rendering something in the receptor language.
 
I am ok with the translation as it stands (there are always things that could be changed per each individual reader), I would like to see a large print edition come out (Ignatius did this with the RSV-CE) and of course a Study Bible. I don’t think Ignatius has ever offered a genuine leather cover on their Bibles in the past. Now if they would let Cambridge of Oxford have the rights to the translation or agree to have them produce them for Ignatius, then maybe.

I like your thinking, but I will stay reading the Douay-Rheims.
 
To be honest, I don’t really want to see another edition of the RSV-CE. I would rather have a major publishing house commission a totally new Catholic translation using the most recent textual finds. Something as literal, yet readable like they did with the ESV, but with more use of the LXX and DSS. (Perhaps Scott Hahn could convince Doubleday to sponsor such an endeavor.)

Ultimately, no matter what they do to the current RSV, it is still a fifty year old translation with a few “touch up” motifications.

The parts of the OT (Genesis 12:3; 18:18; 22:18; 26:4; 28:14; Psalm 45:6) I would like to see changed are actually verses that are quoted in the NT (probably from the LXX).

I like how St. Paul and St. Luke say it better than the RSV2CE editors 😉

Genesis 9:20 is just my own personal opinion.

“Amen” and “Alleluia” are according to the Liturgiam Authenticam which the RSV-2CE claims to be conforming to.

The rest are just more literal

Especially since ραββι is inconsistently translated Rabbi in SOME parts and Master in others.

Yeah would be the best,
However, the project is much more expensive and editors like cheaper revisions 😦

Considering the NAB OT revision started in 1994…
and that the RSV-CE is from 1966 and the RSV-2CE was barely released in 2006

There’s that “Bible in its Traditions” but I have a feeling I’m hoping for too much. We’ll see though! 🙂
