I know you really don’t want to hear this, but if you really want it then you have to be the one to push the rock up hill. I grew up in the Catholic Church. My church is pretty dull, but has a few nice groups. Nothing great and exciting. I went to youth group and went to every youth conference, event, etc. that I could find.
As an adult I have found it hard to be that involved and I have missed the “fun” things that I did outside of mass as a kid…
So I am currently pushing a bolder uphill (with some help from my husband) and it’s hard, but for so many years people have stood back and said, “Why is no one doing anything? This isn’t fun. You be the one to do it.” We’ve lost a lot of the fellowship over the years. If you really want it- make it happen.
Aside from our jobs and busy lives we now are the high school youth ministers (the only volunteer youth ministers in the Diocese that I know of!) because I thought it was terrible that the kids had no group to meet with! We also joined the Respect Life committee and attempt to be active with that. And most recently we started a 20s and 30s couples group out of our chuch but open do any church in the diocese.
If you read nothing else, read this: I have had a countless number of people tell me that there is a young adults group at the Cathedral, as if to say, “why bother with another group just for couples, we only need one like it?!” It is a constant uphill battle to prove that we, as a Church, deserve more than just ONE group out of 10+ churches in the area. It’s tough, but somebody has to do it, right? Out of 10+ churches we have maybe 8 members right now (4 couples). It is not always fun having to plan this stuff and be the one to push the rock, but it will be in the end. Work for the greater good.
Bring the wonderfulness of fellowship that you learned from our Protestant brothers and sisters back to the Church. Maybe we’re a little lost and have forgotten how it’s done. Show us. It’s much better to work for it than to sit around complaining about it not being there. It’ll happen eventually. It didn’t disappear overnight and it won’t come back any quicker.
Lastly, I designed our group after another group in the Diocese of Chicago (I think Chicago?). They have at least 10 different types of these groups! And I’m geeting flack for wanting to start one! It has to start somewhere though!
