With Gay Marriage being allowed will the Catholic Church Change

Three States have approved same-sex marriage in this election. It looks like the Supreme Court, like it did in 1947, will prevent discrimination of people to marry based on race or sexuality. Shouldn’t the Catholic Church reexamine it’s position on homosexuals? Homosexuals have been discriminated against across the ages by the Church for who they love. I have homosexual friends that are in committed relationships that span decades. Is bigotry clouding our view of homosexuals in committed relationships?

Calling sin sin (which is what homosexual sex is) is not bigotry. And the sex act is not ‘who you are’ it is something you choose to do. Just like an adulterer choses to adulter. Are we bigoted against adulterers simply because we condemn adultery as a sin?

Dear Chrish, you may not realize it, but it’s really unfair, and actually insulting, to accuse those who do not accept same-sex relationships as marriage-worthy of “bigotry.” Would you accuse as “bigotted” or “unfairly discriminatory” a college that refuses to give a student credit for their Chemistry course graduation requirement for having taken an English course? The issue is with calling realities as they really are. Two men (or two women) can’t make a marriage, because they are both the same.

The teaching of the Church has to do with human nature. Men and women’s sexuality is connected to their identity, and is authentically oriented outward - towards the opposite sex, with which they can (only) have a fruitful, self-giving, and complementary relationship, and with which they can (unless prevented by some illness, etc.) produce a family. In such a relationship, a child grows up with a set of parents that give them both a male and female influence. How is this possible in a same-sex “marriage”?

The “position” of the Church has been the same since the time of Christ. It’s written about in the Bible, in fact, and it’s an unchangeable teaching. It has to do with human nature, created by God. Otherwise, we’re just adapting to cultural whims, not metaphysical realities.

The Catholic Church did not change when civil divorce became legal. I very much doubt that it will change its rules on same sex marriage where/when civil same sex marriage becomes legal.

At most it might reduce the level of campaigning it does and move on to other things. How many Catholic anti-divorce demonstrations do you see compared to anti-gay marriage demonstrations? The level of campaigning will eventually reduce to the same as the anti-divorce campaign, though the doctrine will not change.

The greatest love we can possibly have for someone is to desire that they not live a life of mortal sin. Is it hard - of course it is. But supporting them and endorsing them in sinful actions is not loving them.

Just as a mother keeps her child from bad and hurtful things, so the Church keeps her faithful from the same - in order to get their souls to heaven.

The Church will never change simply because society becomes immoral. It is society’s change to make to live morally and spiritually healthy lives.

People with homosexual feelings or even orientations, yes. But if by “table of the Lord” you mean holy communion, those who practice homosexual acts (or any other kind of mortal sin, including heterosexual-oriented sexual sins like fornication, or adultery, masturbation, etc.) and who do not repent of them and receive absolution in the sacrament of reconciliation beforehand, are not welcomed by the Church to receive holy communion (as St. Paul notes in the New Testament).

We need to remember that feelings or inclinations do not define a person. The Church doesn’t look at people as “homosexual” or with any other kind of label of that kind. Actions are what matter, and all people are called to live in holiness and obedience to the gospel of Christ, which teaches us to observe chastity according to our proper state in life.

The church doesn’t discriminate against homosexuals. Homosexual acts are a sin and just like any other sin – from murder to lying – the church stance is don’t do it because it is sinful. If the church is discriminating against homsexuals then we are also discriminating against robbers, murders, cheaters, people who fornicate, etc. A person who fornicates doesn’t have any more or less obligations or rights within the Catholic church than a homosexual. On the other hand, it is becoming quite common for people to start accusing others of bigotry when they don’t agree with someone else’s behavior. I think the Aurora Colorado shooter’s behavior is wrong and sinful and I heavily disagree with what he did. Am I commiting bigotry because I don’t agree with murder? I don’t agree with people who exploits and mistreats others at work? Am I commiting bigotry becuase I think that behavior is wrong?
Also, the fact that someone is in commited relationship doesn’t make that relationship right. If a married man has a commited relationship with his mistress while still married to his wife and keeps his wife and her children abandoned, does the commited extra marital relationship makes it right? If an 57 yeaor old is in a committed relationship with a 13 year old girl, does that makes it right? Does being in several commited relationships with women makes polygamy right?
The famous gay rights movement is only a movement to try to shove homosexuality through other people’s throat. In reality it has very little to do with “right” and the ideal proof of it is the Scandinavian countries where the gay marriage resulted in pretty much the disapearance of heterosexual marriages.
Finally, one question to the OP that nobody has been able to answer to me. If gay marriage is such an important right, how come the same liberals proposing it are the ones who were suggesting for the last 20 years the idea of living together without marriage and that marriage is just a contract and that the contract called marriage doesn’t make a family? How come all of a sudden marriage is necessary for gays but is not necessary for heterosexuals?

Great point. Also, knowing the composition of the present Supreme Court: four extra conservative Justices and one swing Justice whose tendency for the past few years is to take the conservative side, the gays will have it thought at the Supreme Court
