I was recently at my mom’s house and came across a book she is reading called With or Without God by Gretta Vosper. There was a Chapter on the early history of Christianity and I was curious to see how she would describe it. This was a few weeks ago and I just skimmed the Chapter b/c I wasn’t there long. I will try to characterize her position as accurately as I can.
Vosper wrote that upon Constantine’s conversion to Christianity it was necessary to show that Jesus intended to create a Church and that is why Matthew 16:18 was added to the Gospels. She argues this was easy to do b/c the Bible was still being put together at that time.
I realize that that is not the only verse that supports the Catholic belief in the Church and the papacy. But I am wondering if someone could give me a response that I could take to my mother that would refute what this author is saying.
Thanks.
