I very much agree with this article.
When contemplating re-union between east and west, it is important to bear in mind how we drifted apart originally. To make a centuries long story short, before the theological and ecclesiological rifts were articulated, a loss of sympathy between eastern and western people developed. As the Roman Empire decayed, they stopped thinking in similar ways.
That process is now running in reverse. We do not have a global empire, but we have its equivilent in modern capitalism and the theory of the absolute state. All over the east and west, people share a common vocabularly of politics, law, and popular culture. The problems that confront Christians in Russia and Greece are again similar to the ones that confront them in Virginia, or France, or Mexico. We all see the tribulations of our bretheren in certain Muslim and communist lands.
With the restoration of a “lingua franca” Orthodox and Catholics will more readily cooperate. As they cooperate, we will discover new ways of looking at old disagreements. With experience, and a renewed willingness to re-examine priorities, we will make progress toward re-unification.
