So I was recently received into the church and my wife did not join. One of the big sticking points for her is NFP. She would like me to use our old method of birth control (withdraw). I’ve made it quite clear that I morally object to that and that I will not partake in the marital act if we aren’t going to be open to life.
We have 4 beautiful children so it isn’t as though we haven’t been open to life, but we are not in a position mentally or financially to have another child at this time. It has probably been over a month since we have had relations and she attempted to pressure me into it this evening. Thus this email, she is very upset with me about it and I quite frankly don’t know what to do. She says that I can’t simply continue to withhold relations but I feel that is the only morally acceptable thing to do.
I will add that I’m not masturbating or pleasing myself in other manners, so it isn’t as though I’m getting my “fix” else where. It is almost bizarre since I’ve been interested in Catholicism so many aspects of our marriage have gone down hill, but I know for certain I’m a better person in many other areas. For instance I was addicted to pornography for about 15-20 years I’d say and I haven’t viewed any since August when I really decided I wanted to become Catholic. I’ve still struggled with masturbation since August but nothing like it was at one time.
I don’t know what to do, it seems as though our marriage is crumbling but at the same time i’ve never felt closer to the Lord in my life. I’m going to email my priest tomorrow for a sit down to discuss this topic further (already spoke briefly about it with him).
Suggestions and prayers are welcomed.
