1 Corinthians 11: 23-29
Quoted from the King James on purpose.
That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood:** this do ye**, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26** For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup**, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body*

Where is the confusion?

RSV 1 Corinthians 11:29 For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself.

When people say that, they are referring to verse 29. Check in your DR. Mine has the same word “discerning” in it, but not in quite the same way.

OHHH, EDIT: my computer version has “discerning” but my bound version says “distinguishing”.

The confusion is that “discerning the body” doesn’t have to mean that when you see the bread and wine you know it’s body and blood, but it could mean that we remember Jesus’ body and blood and acknowledge it in that way. When Jesus breaks the bread and says this is his “body broken for” us, we remember that he broke his body for us; he died for us; he made a new covenant through his blood. That doesn’t necessarily mean we drink the blood and eat his body for real but that we understand that his body and blood shed was for us and we come to him for our spiritual nourishment and filling. That’s why the theme of Jesus’ words are us coming to him and being filled by him. that nothing else can fill us, no food, no thing, etc. the way he can.He is the living water, the bread of life, The real bread, the real water. The bread and water we take is not going to give us eternal life, HE will give us eternal life, and only him.

Not discerning the Lord’s body to me means that the bread and wine is the Real Presence. If not the Real Presence than how can he who eats and drinks unworthily cause damnation to himself?

John6:54 Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day.
55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.

If you read the entire chapter you will see that the Corinthian Chuch did not discern the body of Christ by their greed and their lack of concern for those that did not have food and drink.
