Without Making Any Calls or Looking it Up, Do You Know Which is Your Official, Territorial Parish?

My Priest checked when I approached him about becoming a Catholic and starting RCIA, as to whether it was my territorial Parish. I just told him my address.

In another thread, someone mentioned how they never met someone who didn’t know which parish they belong to. Do you?
Yes. I’m a cradle Catholic who’s belonged to parishes in the United States as well as four Asian cities, and I’ve always known which one I belonged to.

I didn’t know until I joined CAF that there was even Canon Law that placed me in a particular parish. I’ve just always sorta known where to go to register.

I dunno… Maybe it’s some sort of Catholic homing device the priest implanted at Baptism. 🤷

But remember it would be slightly different for you going to Extraordinary Form. I’m not sure how it works in USA or even UK for that matter, but in Perth Australia where I am moving eventually they have territorial Parishes and also others that are according to things like Extraordinary form, or different lanuages etc, so people come from anywhere within the diocese and be part of that community.

Here in Detroit, there is a combination of territorial parishes offering the EF and personal parishes doing so

All are Diocesan and the Masses are offered by Diocesan priests. There has been a sufficient response by priests of the diocese of offer the EF that the diocese has not seen a need to bring any of the priestly societies who have this as their Charism.

I answered the poll in the past tense. I did not know what our territorial parish was or that we were not going to it, until just this past year. Growing up, we went to the parish that was closest to us. It wasn’t until this part year, when I moved to an area in which we have 3 parishes of equal distance, and was curious enough, that I looked up the map. (The diocese really makes this hard to find, and looks like it is only available because of some reorganization of parishes). I also looked at my parent’s parish and discovered that their territorial parish was one quite a bit farther away than the one they attend (a symptom of having the parish not in the middle, but rather at the bottom of its territory).

So I am a Catholic of 25 years (cradle Catholic) and had to look up a map to find my territorial parish. (never could find a map online for a different diocese that I lived in for a while).

I’m a returning Catholic of two years now. I know my second cousin goes to a different parish though and she lives just down the road.

I. (The diocese really makes this hard to find, and looks like it is only available because of some reorganization of parishes).
Interesting. Why is it so hard to find?

Judging by the poll results so far, it looks like most people know where there territorial parishes are. Keep the responses coming! 🙂

I am obviously a newbie and I put “not sure” because when I moved I found the parish boundaries on the diocese website. So my territorial parish just happens to be wonderful. Lucky me. 😃

But that said, in this area I have never heard of anyone having an issue with attending outside their territorial parish. And I have heard of many Catholics talking about parish shopping. Perhaps it is just the area?

Yes I do.It does not offer the traditional Mass so I seldom go there on Sundays, going instead to the local FSSP Parish, yes they have a full parish here offering just about everything. But my territorial parish is still my parish.

These parish threads got me locating and checking out my territorial parish’s website.
Under Confessions, there is a blank page. Under mass, I did notice there is a charismatic mass.

Not my cup of tea at all.

I used to know until last month. I have always known at my other houses in smaller towns, but now I’m back living with my parents in our childhood home.

The parish which was our territorial parish has been given to the local Ordinariate group so I don’t know which one we now belong to. We never went there anyway and I haven’t changed which parish I actually belong to, which is the one I work in (there are 2 closer).

I’ve been a Catholic since birth (30 years) and my family never bothered about going to our territorial parish.

Did you have any problems with receiving sacraments? Confirmations, Baptisms, Marriage/funerals etc?

Are you really surprised?

No, which is why I never bothered going to one of the Catholic churches in my neighborhood. But I just realized this one is about three blocks away.

Sigh, if I only didn’t have to commute.

How does one actually find out their official, territorial parish? I can look at the Archdiocese website and see which one is closest to my house, but I know that sometimes it works out that that isn’t actually your territorial parish.

I am pretty sure my territorial parish is the one I’m registered at, which is about a mile from my house.

Yesterday I called the diocese, they asked for my address and then they told me which parish I belong to.

I answered no because that would have been my response without CAF. After one of these type threads awhile back, I found a map of the parish boundaries.

I actually lived almost on the boundary of four parishes, as in cross the street and go less than a quarter of a mile north or south and I would have been in a different parish. I didn’t attend my official parish, I didn’t know where I was supposed to go when I first started and wasn’t going to change parishes since I was already really involved there.

I recently moved and now I’m pretty sure I’m going to the correct parish, but that is just because I’m in a small town with two parishes, one is right down the street and the other is “across town”. I did try and find a map for this diocese online and couldn’t.

I know which church is considered my territorial parish based on where I live but I do not go there. I go to a different parish due to my work schedule as my territorial parish has Mass times that conflict with my work times.

I am in my 30’s and have been Catholic all my life.

If it is only 3 blocks away, why don’t you at least visit it. You may be pleasently suprised. I have found most parish websites aren’t maintained too well, so what you read there may not be correct. Who knows, your teens may love the charismatic Mass. 😉
