Witness the faith by dressing up as a saint this halloween!

I think dressing up as a saint for Halloween is a great way to witness to the faith and the saints’ example this halloween; to the witches, skelletons, and ghosts that walk the streets. To further this, I wrote an article on how to make ten Halloween Costumes of saints and got it published on a mainstream content network. For those who like the gruesome side of Halloween there’s plenty of gruesome ways to be martyred, and the way a saint is martyred traditionally forms a major part of their iconography, although that has declined more recently (the one that immediately springs to mind is St Agatha who was traditionally represented carrying her breasts on a plate)

Perhaps for the younger set, St. Lucy carrying eyeballs on a plate would be more appropriate.

I only had the space to deal with five common male saint costumes and five female saint costumes. The article has so far been a success, with an above-average performance for the month of October. Therefore, it will make sense for me to write sequals in September of 2009. I will then be able to cover more “obscure” saints such as saints not widely known outside of Catholic circles, and even a few unknowns such as Saint Joseph Mascotti the doctor.

When we do something at Church with the children that is who I dress as, I even purchased a lab coat just for that! The only thing I need left is a black curly wig - I am so not black haired - going grey now (as a matter of fact I got called “grandma” yesterday by a little one in line at the early voting place ).

My daughter goes as St. Cecilia, a sheet and flower crown.

My parish has the kids dress up for religious formation the weekend of Halloween.

My oldest (9) is always St.Benedict (we use the brown jedi robe I made for him to be ObiWan Kenobi lol).

This year my two middle kids (age 5 and 6) are going to be Mary and Joseph, I think. I had better figure it out soon if I need to get any fabric.

Ok that tears it…I am now sooo going as my patron St. Lawrence. He was an early Church martyr that was grilled to death…I already got some ideas.

No kidding…My personal favorite for gruesome is St. Bartholomew who was skinned alive. Several of the statues depicting him could have come out of a Halloween store.

The Catholic school I work for has decided this year to have the lower elementary dress as saints and and middle school where black on their annual walk to the cemetary to pray those buried there. My daughter decided to by St. Veronica. I believe that most of the kids are quite excited about it.

At the school where I teach, All Saints Day is a HUGE celebration.

The kids do age appropriate saint reports, dress up and bring in food from the saint’s native country. We have an all school Mass in the morning, saint presentations until lunch and games in the afternoon.

Our archbishop is coming to concelebrate the Mass this year.
