I have the book, but have only gotten through the first part on his years growing up in Poland and entering an underground seminary, during the Nazi occupation.

The author, George Weigle, did a great job on the book. He left no stone unturned when it came to doing research for the book.
In fact, John Paul II himself asked Weigle to write it.
