DH is an electrician who is not terribly excited about his job. It’s tough. I always ask about his day…where he worked, anything interesting happen, etc. He always gives me the same line…same stuff, a different day. 😦 I so wish that he could find satisfaction in his job…since him NOT having a job is not an option!

I work as support staff in law enforcement. I deal with all kinds of stuff every day, so always have plenty to share with DH. Our kids are also kind of spread out…19, 17 and 4. The oldest is in college, away from home. The middle one is working very hard at getting into the Naval Academy. The youngest just wants to play with cars and Legos…even in church! So, we have a variety of life situations to talk about!

My DH is an electrician too. I am totally not interested in the subject --I tried, but it is beyond me. I sit there and nod politely, and worry about him getting electrocuted.

I am a nurse, and I also have a degree in English. Our Doctor always talks to me about any medical problems my husband has because he says “Some people cannot process medical information” and that fits my husband to a tee. He cannot understand medical things and is totally not interested. HE worries about me bringing home germs from the hospital.

However, when his beloved dog got diabetes, my husband was the one that gave the dog his insulin and managed his diet, and he did a good job. But I think that was because he liked the dog better than me:D Go figure.

Do you consider it a dead-end job?
😛 :rotfl:
Sorry… my grandfather’s humor is shining through… God rest his soul!

(I promise I’m not mocking you… my BIL was in the funeral business and it’s a difficult job I truly admire - I hope you don’t take offense! :))
😃
No, everyone is just dying to meet me and I’ll be the last one to let you down! 😃

Don’t worry, I’m not offended. You have to have a good sense of humor to be in this business. I actually love my job - I think making people look nice and helping families is my gift from God. 👍

I usually ask during dinner just to be polite but he usually doesnt give a very energetic answer. I actually try not to know what he does. He’s a farmer. Yes, Not nearly as cool as all the scientists and engineers on here 😛 but what I didn’t realize when I married him was that farming is one of the most dangerous jobs you can do. I was a lot more interested in it until one day I came home and found he’d been dragged underneath a tractor and nearly run over… at night… with no one else around. Apparently, he was doing something under the tractor while it was running an auger or something and it slipped into gear and caught his pants. The auger eventually killed the tractor just before the tractor killed my husband. He had to wait there until one of the other hands came around to hear him scream. They had to take the wheels off that side of the tractor to get him loose.

I work in IT at a hospital. He barely knows how to turn a computer on. We don’t talk about work much. 🤷 When we do, we talk about the co-workers mostly.
Oh my…that must be a tear-jerking story when you heard it. I mean, that was a matter of life and death. Glad that he made it through that dangerous situation.

Wow, we have very similar lives, lol!! Dh is an electrician and I was working in nursing before we got married (I stopped to be a SAHM).

A lot to do with dh’s work is completely above and beyond me. I ask him about his work and show interest in what he does but for the most part whenever he tries to explain something to me I end up really confused. I ask him how his day went and I pray for him every day but we rarely talk about the specifics of what he does at work. **

My DH is an electrician, too! He works for the city (facility maintenance) and is currently a journeyman, working toward getting his masters license, as well as being a CPO (certified pool operator.) I swear the city must shut down when he goes on vacation! Back when we first got married 20 years ago, he worked construction, framing and drywall (his dad was a contractor), and the first day he came home from a drywall job raving about the “beautiful butts” in the house he was working on, I got rather, well, peeved… until he explained he was talking about butt joints (where the drywall sheets meet vertically). I learned the vernacular rather quickly after that to avoid misunderstandings!

I’m a cake decorator, who also bakes bread, stocks shelves, puts up freight, does various customer service duties and occasionally makes donuts. We talk about work, mostly how our day went, anything interesting, frustrating or funny that went on. We’ve both come a long way in learning what each other does–I know the difference in roof pitches, what the recommended Ph level in a city pool should be and what could cause it to be off, and what a light knock-down texture is compared to an orange peel. I also know what’s going on with his co-workers, his boss and where the best place to go for lunch on a Wednesday. He’s learned what stresses me out at work (in a nutshell–market team and QPR visits), the difference between buttercreme and Bettercreme icing, and how to tell which decorating tip is used to make roses and which one is used to make a shell border. He’s even offered to help ice cakes (as long as he can use his drywall pan and knife!) And he’ll ask me, “So how’d Cindy’s kid do at his track meet last weekend?” or “Is Jennifer still mad at her boyfriend?”

So we talk about work, blow off steam, congratulate each other, offer encouragement… then we talk about important things like our son, his school work, weekend plans, family and what’s for dinner. It’s all good!

DH and I are both in funeral service and work for the same funeral home so,
we had a friend who was a teacher, but moonlighted doing makeup and hair for “clients” at a funeral home owned by her family. She ended up marrying one of the morticians they hired and now works their fulltime in management, and still does her sideline.

Once upon a time I went with my husband to work for the day and gained new respect for the difficulties he encountered every day. He rarely complained and always had a positive attitude, so I didn’t know what life was like for him when we were apart. I think it made me admire him all the more. I work with mentally ill children and their families and my husband has always cared, but his sensitive soul doesn’t really want to know the details, and that’s okay with me. It made us able to focus on our family and friends, etc., while leaving work at work.

I’m teme’s wife, and he’s got it pretty much spot on. I know what he does, I know just a bit about the industry (enough, I hope that I don’t just sit there with a glazed look in my eyes when he tells me about it), but I’m not super interested in the specifics of the day to day stuff. Of course, if he wants to tell me about it or needs to vent, I’m always willing to listen.
I just don’t feel the need to know as much about his job as he does. Just as, I assume, he doesn’t want to know about every single little detail of my day.

We both talk about our jobs all the time -maybe too much. I’ve met a few of her co-workers for dinners and they talk shop.

I’m a team leader in an IT shop, and I tell her about my projects. She hears all my complaints and accomplishments or lack thereof.

She tells me about her office, all the personalities, politics etc.
