Where can I find the correct teaching on Epph 5:21-27? Our priest says womem have a right to be upset at “Wives submit to your husbands” and that is not for this modern day culture.

Submitting to one’s husband doesn’t mean that she submits to an abusive environment or that she tolerates a man who is cheating on her. Submitting means that we look to our husbands as role models as men, and we don’t compete for that role within our homes. I’m the female authority…my husband is the male. We are different, yet strong, if we respect each other, equally. Men are to cherish and respect their wives too…that is the other component to that verse. But, again, God expects a lot of husbands. He wouldn’t want a man abusing that verse and twisting it to mean that women should bow down to men, and tolerate all types of behavior. It means that men must rise to the occasion to be Godly husbands, and women should respect those roles given to their husbands. I hope that helps?

there is a two CD set on this exact topic available at www.catholicintl.com that really examines it from all aspects. If you can’t still get it… PM me and I will send you a set… no charge.

Hi,

There is a great book and also a video series titled Love and Respect it is written by Emmeritt Eggrich(Not sure of spelling)I took the video series in sunday school class and I highly reccomend it. Not only was Emmerit funny he was right on with everything from both sides.

I think all newlyweds should be required to watch this. Divorce would be at an all time low:D 👍

I get so sick of renegade, modernist priests who have no idea what they are talking about. It was never a matter of culture.
It reminds me of the response to Napoleon after he told Church officials that he would destroy the Church (I paraphrase):
**“No you won’t. If bad popes, immoral priests and thousands of sinners in the Church haven’t succeeded in doing so from the inside, how do you think you’re going to do it?” **

Keep the faith.

Ummm…that priest is way off. I submit to my husband in all matters of faith and educating our kids. Of course we discuss…and if we are not in complete agreement…we go with his way. The husband is supposed to be the spiritual leader of the household. As it is, my DH and I rarely disagree anyway, but the truth is…when it comes down to it, he is the head of our household. I know my husband respects me and my opinions and he doesn’t make decisions lightly, so whatever he says goes.

Jebbie -

It seems to me that the key lies in going on to the following
verse(s): “Husbands, love your wives as Christ loves the Church.” (He gave all He had for her good, ultimately dying on the cross for her).

Does the same submission apply, say, if a Catholic woman were married to a Protestant man?

Does the same submission apply, say, if a Catholic woman were married to a Protestant man?
And, to further add, what if that Protestant man is anti-Catholic and forbidding the Catholic woman to attend mass?

For a Catholic woman to marry a Protestant man requires (at least to be married in the Catholic Church) that they both agree to raise the children Catholic. Other than that, I would say yes… In somuch as the husband should decide which family or religious traditions are kept at holidays and how children are taught about God. I am not talking doctrine…just simply, we believe in God, explanation of the trinity, reading Bible stories to the children, etc… As for Catholic doctrine…that should be taught by the Catholic family member no matter the gender. A Father is a very powerful role model to children. He is usually the source of wisdom and dicipline in a home.

Why do so many people omit the rest of the passage?

25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,
26so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
27that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.
28So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself;
29for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30because we are members of His body.

When women have holy husbands submission is not difficult that’s the whole point…the submission is contingent upon the man’s worthiness to be submitted to…

Women don’t need to be offended by the passage…what they need to do is take a good hard look at their intended husband’s to determine whether or not he is worthy of her trust. If he doesn’t measure up…walk away.

’ Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ '-might be a key passage here … God calling on women ( some would say the last and best of God’s creation ! 🙂 ) to model that loving reverence… recognising that any reverence given to the husbands is reverence shown to The Lord … thus men too , to be helped ,to be trusting and surrendering …

may be easier for Catholics , who can see the awesome humility, out of love , of our Lord, who allow the priest - given the power of consecration, to act in His Name …

Powers of evil know that scornfulness , esp. towards husbands, fathers , can be a subtle yet powerful weapon to destroy the family - esp. among minorities , where the men might find it difficult to get other external recognition …and that any contempt formulated in the minds of the young through t.v. programs and such that portray the fathers / husbands as dumb or inept is the way to get them to also rebel against The Father…

Thank God , we have Worship …and graces of the perfect Love of our Lord for His Church and the efforts of The Church, to be faithful and reverent of what she need to be ! 🙂

Excellent point! All too often people pick and choose the passages that they need to fit their agenda’s without reading or referencing the rest of the important information.

I attended a Marian Peace Conference a couple of weeks ago. While there we heard from Doug Barry and Eric Genuis of RADIX. They have some good CD’s out about the roles of men in a family. One of them is called “The Character of a Man” and another is"What’s a Ship Without a Rudder?" . They can be found at www.radixguys.com. They are great speakers! I highly recommend listening to them.
