This one hits home…Fr. Schultz was our priest when we first moved to God’s Country. He is truly a wonderful soul and I was sick when I saw this story locally earlier today.

However bad this woman might be, this seems like a serious lack of judgement on the part of the priest, even if he did have the money himself and didn’t use parish funds. You’d have to ask, what is he thinking? Who needs $318k to live? Nobody, nowhere in the country, needs that much money to exist for a year.

edit: Somebody said he gave her his own personal retirement money. Of course he can do that but… seriously?? I won’t pretend to know how I will act or what I will do when I’m 74 but looking up towards that, right now I can say that if I were going to give serious money to someone, if I had it, I’d need to see some serious documentation of real, demonstrated financial need. Nobody needs $318k a year for an apartment, electricity, gas, car payment and groceries. Nobody.

Even if one were living very comfortably in a very expensive area of a very expensive city (New York or Vancouver or London say), $318k would not be required to “get by”.
