Hello fellow Catholics! Happy God Day!

I’m on another IMB and this topic came up in our religion and politics forum. Of course it has opened a hornets nest of complaints about the Catholic Church. I was interested to see what you all think of this story. This is the original link that was posted on the IMB I was referencing above.

foxnews.com/story/0,2933,505183,00.html

In a nutshell, a 9 year old girl was impregnated after she was raped by her stepfather. The 9 year old’s mother has the little girl get an abortion (aborting twins actually) because she didn’t want her daughter to go through with this.

The Catholic Church in Brazil where this all took place advised the mother to have the little girl get a C-section because natural child birth was putting the little girl at a health risk.

The Church also informed the mother that she and her daughter would be excommunicated through their actions if they in fact did obtain the abortion.

I personally understand and agree with the Church’s viewpoint on this subject. The website I am on however, doesn’t hold this same opinion. Instead, and as most of you can suspect, it has turned into another reason to bash the Catholic Church and her faithful.

Here is the website address where and the thread involved.

You may not be able to view this thread if you’re not a member of the board. So I’m sorry if that link won’t allow you to view the comments.

I would love to hear your (name removed by moderator)ut on this gang. Several Catholics I know have responded and they agree with the mother seeking the abortion. I however, don’t agree.

I have found other articles relating to this. I believe the New York Times carried the story as well. I’m sorry I don’t have that link at the moment.

Would you mind posting your thoughts on this? I’d like some Catholic backing and refreshing on this difficult subject.

Thank you all in advance and may God bless your days!

I agree with the abortion, she is just 9 yrs old and does not have to live with it for the rest of her life, it is not her fault

You are absolutely right! She does not have to live with the baby for the rest of her life, she can give the baby for adoption. And definitely she does not have to live with abortion for the rest of her life - being raped is already terrible.

Don’t fall for the lies, the emotional and totally false arguments made so often against the Church and it’s teachings on the sanctity of life.

The Church has always taught that the intentional murder of any human being, especially an innocent baby by abortion, is always an intrinsic evil and is always wrong.

The Church has also always taught that mothers life is to be protected while all means possible should also be used to try to also preserve the life of the babies (premature babies survive outside the womb as young as 4 months old with today’s technology).

With today’s medical advances, both lives can usually be spared. We should at least try!

It is ridiculous to argue that the mean, backward and Medieval Church put the innocent 9 year old in a life threatening situation.

The people were excommunicated for murdering the innocent babies by abortion. If they had removed the babies and did everything to try to keep them alive, but they were unsuccessful and the babies died, then there would be no problem. But to just murder them for the sake of expediency, that is inexcusable!

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” Mt 19:14.

I, for one, do not want to have to answer for the murder of innocent children at my judgment, I have too many other sins to answer for already!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

Hi,
I do not know much about Canon Law and excommunication other than a quick quote I read from a website that lets the Bible explain it. As I understand some members of the Church are to see if the women is repentant a few times if necessary; is that an inclusion in the policy for excommunication? (I’m almost certain it is). Is the Archbishop following Canon Law or moreso taking on the situation at hand? What I’m really asking here is, if someone has an abortion does that automatically mean they and the doctors or other affirmers are excommunicated? More specifically, in this case was the Biblical method of going back to your brother two or three times provided or did the Archbishop jump to excommunication for all members involved? Either way I am not to judge him and I cannot say I fully appreciate all the turmoil he must deal with being so high up in the Church. I am glad someone posted that we should pray for them all; that really helped my understanding of the correct spirit to have for such matters. May Mary guide us all to her son, Jesus Christ and may the Holy Spirit be strong in us all, especially in these times.

The 9 year old daughter is not excommunicated, only her mother and the doctors and staff who performed the abortions. .
He said the excommunication would not apply to the child because of her age, but would affect all those who ensured the abortion was carried out. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7926694.stm
This poor child was betrayed both by her step-father and by her mother. Where was her mother’s concern for her during the last 3 years while her stepfather was raping her, and possibly her 14 year old physically handicapped sister? Was she blind or just didn’t want to know?
