Well, so far with searches on the net I have not found any studies that show that Plan B prevents implantation. Perhaps they should revise written information given with the pills to reflect that it prevents ovulation. This would be good for those who, in the case of rape, could know that it only prevents ovulation and therefore must be taken as soon as possible to prevent fertilization. If they think it prevents implantation, they have another think coming.

I mentioned indirect evidence. Whether we are talking about the so-called morning after pill or traditional oral contraceptive treatment the mechanisms are similar:
I disagree. While it’s true that the traditional oral contraceptives do cause thinning of the endormetrium, at least in non-ovulatory cycles, and has been hypothesized to prevent implantation, it’s not clear that this effect on the endometrium occurs with emergency contraception.

For example, this study found no effect on the endometrium from emergency contraception in cases where ovulation occurred.

From a logical point of view, no one can ever absolutely prove that emergency contraception prevents implantation since it’s impossible to prove a negative. Similarly, I can’t prove that caffeine isn’t an abortifacient. Given the lack of evidence for any sort of abortifacient effect, I believe that it’s okay for rape victims to use emergency contraception.

From the manufacturer’s website:
CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
Emergency contraceptives are not effective if the woman is already pregnant. Plan B® is
believed to act as an emergency contraceptive principally by preventing ovulation or fertilization
(by altering tubal transport of sperm and/or ova). In addition, it may inhibit implantation (by
altering the endometrium). It is not effective once the process of implantation has begun.

Logic tells us that it is likely the environment may become hostile depending on when it is taken. Logic also tells us to error on the side of caution when dealing with human life.

As I posted it is very difficult, at this time, to prove directly it is abortifacient but the likelyhood is great.

From the manufacturer’s website:
You’ll see in my first post in my thread that I addressed the manufacturer claims. They may still put that information on their websites and on the information leaflets, but that’s not actual evidence.

I contend that there’s no real reason to suspect that the environment might become especially hostile. There’s no science that supports the claim.

Pax vobiscum!

It amazes me the lengths to which [Mod edit: some] Catholics and other Christians will go to defend the birth control pill or morning after pill.

**TAMPA (Jan. 30) - A woman who told police she had been raped was jailed for two days after officers found an old warrant accusing her of failing to pay restitution for a 2003 theft arrest.

While she was behind bars, according to the college student’s attorney, a jail worker refused to give her a second dose of the morning-after contraceptive pill because of the worker’s religious convictions**.

The 21-year-old woman was released Monday only after attorney Vic Moore reported her plight to the local media.

Well, I have had enough of gullible people, who actually believe the claim that the morning after pill prevents an egg from implanting, and then force that view onto another person.

I, along with many other people, have filed a formal complaint with the Florida Department of Health against this “worker”, i.e. a nurse or medic, to have their license revoked. I am also filing a criminal complaint with the FDLE. It just has to stop. Even the pharmaceutical companies have publically stated that the MAP prevents implantation is out and out speculation, with almost no data to back it up.

MD’s, just are not educated enough, or trained well enough to do reliable scientific research. That is why a PHD is considered a higher degree. Because of the ineptness of clinical researchers and the biotech companies greediness and desire to “talk up” their product, rape victims are now being punished based on the wild claim the the MAP “might” prevent implantation.
Not only do you have no standing to file a criminal complaint you have no standing to file a complaint with the Department of Health.

First, this affects you in no way.
Second, you do not even know the whole story, all you have is what is reported in the news story and that is seldom, if ever, the whole truth of the matter. Many times they even get the facts wrong.

We have the right to the freedom of religious expression, if our religious convictions prevent us from assisting in acts that goes against our beliefs and it is not a life threatening thing then we should not have to participate.

I hate to tell you but the use of the “morning after pill” which is also called “emergency contraception” (I put this here as faithful Catholics are against contraception) is far from a life and death matter. It is an elective thing and no one has to particpate in elective medical procedures.

As a side note, the article title is very misleading. It makes it look like this woman was arrested and placed in jail for reporting a rape when in actuallity she was arrested and placed in jail for a crime that she had commited and then ran from.

BioCatholic,

As another poster said even if ECs NEVER prevent implantation, something that I would need to see to believe, the worker can still have opinions concerning birth control itself. I certainly do. So I don’t see why you should be so intent on getting the poor guy fired, or worse. I for one think that ALL pharmacists should have the right to not sell both Birth Control and ECs.

Maybe a few other people should write in and tell them what a pity it would be that a person should be fired from his job for no wanting to violate his religious beliefs.
