The gay couple, from the West Midlands, had been together for 18 years when they decided they wanted a family…When the twins were born there was an “awkward moment” before the surrogate mother agreed to hand them over, as her husband had been telling medical staff the infants were his own.
“She was reminded that it was a deal and she was fine. She was a little bit too attached and she needed to be reminded,” Mr Busher said. “We produced the contract and we were able to take them out of the hospital. We were so happy our feet didn’t touch the ground.”

Children and women being treated like a commodity, children taken out of the arms of their mother, and “we were so happy our feet didn’t touch the ground.” Farm animals get similar treatment, and sometimes more sympathy.

Why this form of prostitution is not considered the least bit immoral is beyond me.
 
I’m blown away with a comment that suggests the birth mother was “a little too attached”.

Um… she was actually attached. How do they not even get that. How sad.

I imagine this woman agreed to this for money alone. Did her husband even know? Why on earth was he telling everyone they were his babies. Did he not know she was carrying an embryo then child not of their making?

While I understand the Catholic teaching on this, I’ve known people to go through this process: In a fashion that was at least on the up and up, everyone clear about their role.

It’s the human trafficking component that makes this much much worse. Do these childless couples realize what they are doing? Or do they just not care?

Honestly? I think because human trafficking happens in our own back yard, and we do very little about it.

Did you know Superbowl Sunday is the biggest US human trafficking day of the year? Goggle it.

On a political level, for example, we the US, are not to supply ANYTHING to foreign countries that force children in military style work. Our Pres. in one breath talks of how human trafficking is not acceptable, in the next supplies a country with a boy army.

We shop at walmart, and buy things “cheap” with little care that the stamp “made in china” might very well mean, made in a labor camp. The more I learn the less I’m even able to shop. It’s crazy!

As a society, we have levels of acceptance of these horrors. And we stay blind to it nearly by choice.

Catholics do consider this immoral, (as I’m sure you know, but clarifying for any who didn’t.)

We can see here one terrible side effect of what happens to women (and the children they give birth to) when sex and marriage are disconnected: Exploitation of women’s bodies. Selling of children. 😦

It’s frustrating sometimes when I hear or read comments from people who accuse the Church of oppressing women while those same people vocally support “lifestyles” that exploit women in this manner.

Lord have mercy on us.

Who goes to the Super Bowl, picks up children that he had pre-arranged by contract, and then writes an essay in which he says of the girl’s mother: “She was reminded that it was a deal and she was fine. She was a little bit too attached and she needed to be reminded…We produced the contract and we were able to take them out…We were so happy our feet didn’t touch the ground.” And he and his “partner” (I should like to say “accomplice”) did this with the husband of that mother forced to watch and able to do nothing, because his wife’s womb had been rented out to some other men! And the hospital staff…what could they do? Can you imagine being a doctor or nurse and having to watch this kind of “commerce” taking place in the maternity ward?

These fellows from the Midwest are writing about taking children from their mother with less sympathy than if they were taking puppies away from theirs. There is no concept that what they are doing is entirely wrong, no fear that anyone will not see them as “on the side of good.” That goes beyond an expectation of ignorant tolerance (which is horrific enough) to the expectation of active approval.

Yes, and some of these “people who accuse the Church of oppressing women” are in the Church! Many others are Christians who advocate for “gay marriage”, as if rent-a-womb and sperm-for-hire isn’t part and parcel of that contemporary charade.

Frustrating hardly begins to describe it.

Yes, I know. I know. :sad_yes:

What I don’t know is how to share this type of information in a way that gets through to them! I haven’t been hanging out on CAF for a while because I’ve spent more time lately corresponding more on the computer with old friends from way back. We came through Catholic school together and many still consider themselves Catholic. There’s a strong feminist contingent and some throw words like “homophobe” around with pro-gay propaganda. I just want to scream! I was going to share this with them, but when I’ve posted things about the exploitation of women in third world nations by wealthy gay men, they ignore my comments. People don’t want to recognize that this type of exploitation of women is logical extention of the contemporary philosophy that separates sex, marriage and baby-making.

It’s not good for women. It’s not good for children. And it’s not good for men either.

I don’t understand your reference to the Superbowl.

In case I wasn’t clear… my point was that we are already quite complacent as a society with regard to human trafficking. Superbowl Sunday and it’s location is notably the largest forced sex trafficking day of the year, and this happens in our country, where we pretend that there aren’t thousands of children being sold for sex right under our civilized noses.

It seems so much easier to slide into this slippery slope. We already accept the horrors of forcing children into sexual relationships by way of pretending it doesn’t happen here, with children forced to carry weapons and kill their enemy, and children and women and often men in slave labor camps to produce our cheap goods. This woman, in theory, agreed to be a surrogate. It’s not clear if her husband was even aware. The idea that women are being forced into this situation is even more frightening and sad. And worse that anyone would partake in a forced pregnancy to build their “family” is absolutely beyond my comprehension… Just one more step into the world of using people just however we (collective society we) however we please. As long as we have enough money.

With regards to sharing this with your friends and such, I would highlight the bit about women being forced into this. What good “parent” is ok with that. Start there… by force is the bigger issue. Baby steps.

Ah…now I get you!

Yes, out and out sexual slavery is far worse than “victimless” prostitution that is ostensibly “voluntary”. Neither can be tolerated, but the people who are literally rounding others up for bondage ought to be the highest priority for law enforcement. Public opinion needs to be very clear on that, yes.
