I had to laugh at this - truth really is stranger than fiction. But this apparently is the world we live in now…

“An all-women’s college in South Hadley, Mass., has expanded its definition of “women” with a new admissions policy this week. On Tuesday, Mount Holyoke College President Lynn Pasquerella announced in her convocation speech that the school would accept openly transgender students, including students who were born male but identify themselves as women.”

On Tumblr people are even making up their own adjectives. They won’t go by he or she or yourself, but by stuff like “bun” and “cell” and “cellself”. Each person has their own set of them and they get offended if you don’t use them.

The world has truly gone mad.

I have answered to “stud muffin” for some time now.

It is indeed confusing.

BUT, it is true. The question is how Christians react compassionately to people who, through God’s biology not acting as it should, end up with some sort of gender dysphoria or sexual attraction issue.

If you start from the perspective that it is not their fault, where does that lead you?

I do believe that some people truly feel their physical gender and their mental gender are different, and that there are plausible biological explanations for this.

People need to get over this transgender hype. Those who are truly transgendered have elements of both genders (sexual organs/systems) within. They may appear male, but feel female, or vis-a-versa. It is not a choice they make at random. So there should be a lot less “complaining” about it. And if the transgender person identifies with being a female than that is what she is.

Let it go people, and spend your time on something better.

That is the wrong attitude to have here. We need to emphasize Catholic teaching on this. :yup:

So, being born male doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to get into a women’s college.

The Church holds that physical gender is not a changeable attribute. If you are born a female and have gender dysphoria, you are not really a male. You may think you are really a male, because you are a female afflicted with gender dysphoria. It is a very difficult situation, but it does not mean that you were “supposed” to have gotten a body to match what your mind is telling you. It also does not mean that you chose to think the way you do, that what your mind tells you has no basis in the chemistry of your brain. That is conceivably possible, but I don’t think anyone is accusing people with gender dysphoria of doing that. The Church is not. Why would they* choose* to feel an intense dissatisfaction with themselves? No, the Church is only saying that even an intense and even painful dissatisfaction rooted in biochemistry doesn’t change the truth of who you are.

This is different than being a hermaphrodite, with DNA and/or external genitalia not typical of either males or females, but something else.

Well, it IS the truth of who you are. Someone who believes to their core they are a woman (for example) in a man’s body. What a terrible cross to bear.

The point being that altering your appearance does not make a woman into a man. That is beyond the capacity of a surgeon to accomplish. It could relieve a patient’s suffering or lower the chance that they will harm themselves, but it does not change a person’s gender. Yes, it would be an awful thing to live through.

Yes, I agree that you can not make a man into a woman. It’s a terrible situation.

I’m not actually sure about that. There are discernible differences between male and female brains that show up on a scan. Transgender individuals generally show up as the gender they claim to be. So it’s at least plausible that there really is such a thing as a “male brain” and “female brain” and that some people have brains that don’t match their body, just like some people have bodies that don’t match their chromosomes. As far as I know the church has not provided a definitive definition of male and female in such cases.

I’m almost cynical enough to decide to sue the state to change my officially registered sex from ‘male’ to ‘female.’ It no longer matters that I’ve got normal XY chromosomes, that I’m happily married to a woman (and have kids) or that I sing bass. Who are you to tell me that I’m NOT really a transgendered, butch lesbian? If you oppose my re-classification, then you’re a prejudiced, small minded, homophobic bigot. So there.

Once I’m officially a woman, I’m opening my own consulting engineering company and getting it certified in Cook County, IL as a WBE (Woman-owned Business Enterprise). Then I will rake in tons of taxpayer cash as there are big set asides for DBE/WBE firms and few qualified to meet the requirements.

If a transgendered, butch, lesbian-owned business isn’t disadvantaged, who IS? 😉

Anyways, that’s my secret ‘get-out-of-bankruptcy free’ card if I ever need it. Now you can steal it from me - if you’re from Illinois (or dumb enough to move here)… and you’re a transgendered butch lesbian too. 🙂

The Vatican has made it clear that the gender on baptismal certificates is not to be altered because someone is a transsexual or has transgender surgery later in life. While surgery might be deemed necessary to relieve suffering–people can be so afflicted by gender dysphoria that they will try to harm themselves or commit suicide if they have an appearance at odds with their thoughts–the Church holds that a surgery that alters their appearance does not alter a person’s gender. A person can’t change from woman to man and then marry a woman, nor could a woman change to a man and be ordained.

I believe to my core that I am an NFL caliber athlete. I believe to my core (and I am not kidding here) that I am a smarter and better QB than Peyton Manning. 🤷 Never mind that I turn 40 this year and am horribly out of shape (the reality of my body) But I honestly feel I should be out on the field on Sunday and I think I should get the call.

I’m pretty sure baptismal certificates can’t be altered period. So if a baby was born and recorded as female and they found out “she” had XY chromosomes the baptismal certificate couldn’t be altered either.

It is possible to make a notation, if there was something like a clerical error or a deception. An error would be noted and corrected if the child’s birth date or the names of her parents had been entered incorrectly; it is just that the original notation would not be obliterated. For instance, if a boy named Aaron were incorrectly entered in the baptismal register as a girl named Erin, he would not be prohibited later in life from being accepting for Holy Orders or marrying a woman in the Church, if it could be shown that there was merely a clerical error in the original record.

Correcting that kind of a recording error is different than pretending that a surgeon can alter a person’s gender, or that it is one’s most deep-seated self-perception that ultimately determines gender. Self-perception can be in error, even if the error is due to deep-seated structural or chemical issues in the brain that are no fault nor any choice of the patient. A surgery intended to relieve suffering or the grave danger of self-harm might accommodate the self-perception of the patient, but Church records aren’t to be altered as if an actual gender change were accomplished by that surgery. It isn’t that it is wrong to alter gender with the knife and hormones. It is that it is impossible.
