whatevergirl: Thanks for the prayers and great words of wisdom. I’ll take them to heart. Your comment about it being a form of escape sure seems like it might be the case. Anxiety, emotional distance - yes. Escape? A different twist but definitely is the case. It really is a complicated picture - dealing with (for the first time this past year) sexual abuse, thoughts and feelings about another guy (which probably are the result of the same root problem). It’s kind of a tortured world I live in if I’m not careful, and I try to be. So your prayers are appreciated. It’s those of others, as well as frequent reception of the sacraments and prayer that are helping. And helped me get through one day today! Yeah! 👍
Anxiety and lonliness due to that emotional distance are a couple of major ingredients that drives this habit. For those few minutes the hurts of life seems to go away and it actually feels good to be alive. Now throw in a heaping helping of religious guilt and shame that follows immediately afterward and the pain, anxiety and lonliness returns tenfold. Many of us seem to feel it’s necessary to punish ourselves for experiencing any relief whatsoever. However, incredibly powerful their draw and ability to provide temporary relief, masturbation, alcohol, cigarettes, chocolate, gambling or even golf are not the answer to life’s difficulties. The main thing that people who are struggling with this need to understand is that this is not always about “lust” and “pleasure seeking”. The release of endorphins within the brain is the ultimate pain killer. To begin work on the emotional issues that are causing the hurt if the first step toward healing. Always be sure to spend a few minutes each day just talking to God just like you would talk to your most trusted friend. Tell him everything, your fears, hurts, joys, and sorrows. He knows that our failures are not an attempt to hurt him.
😉

^^ Beautiful, perfect, accurate evaluation. I cannot improve on these observations & conclusions. I would only intensify the last portion about being In the Presence by encouraging attendance of Adoration/Exposition in particular, as there is something about the visual impact of that which can asist in the process that TLM poignantly describes.

Thank you for this great post on behalf of undoubtedly many of both genders who struggle with these human conditions.

For helping me with my sins in general I began a while ago adding Holy cards to mirrors, light switches, above my computer and beside my bed on the night table.
I found that seeing a picture of Our Blessed Mother in all her compassion praying for us slowed the urge to do less of whatever sin I was contemplating.
Consequently she and holy cards of saints and Her Son show up in interesting places in our home. And our home altar/shrine is in our bedroom at the end of our bed.
Our Lady appears on the window sill of over my bath. A holy card image of Christ laughing is on my side of the mirror over where I dress and put on makeup and do my hair.
At work they slow me down from uncharitable speech and hasty answers.
I especially focus on them while praying when my desire to sin gets strong.
Bless you in this struggle.
Now if I could only figure out how to keep a holy card in the fridge to help me remember that gluttony is a sin too.🙂

A friend recommended me to xxxchurch.com when I struggled with the same sins (I’m still not perfect). Basically, without blocking objectionable web sites, it keeps a record of every thing you visit, and emails a list of all the sites to an accountability partner. That way, you have the freedom to surf the web at your discretion, but you know that anything you look at, someone other than God will see.

I used covenanteyes.org, but both are really inexpensive and helpful. Perhaps after talking with your husband, you could make him and a trusted member of your parish an accountability partner and help break the chains of porn.

I can identify. God bless you and may our blessed Mother keep you.

Wow, I didn’t know there was anything like that. That’s pretty helpful. I’ve always known that having someone hold you accountable helps a great deal. This makes it impossible to get away with anything.
