Women and self defense?

America= Cowboy land…
Not all of us who support the right to own a weapon live in the country and even if we do, we’re not “cowboys”. Forgive me if I’m mistaking your intention, but I do find that term derogatory. As for rural areas, if it takes the police forever to come and no one can hear you scream, what are you going to do??

I live in the city and I cannot tell you how much I wish I could own something to protect myself. A lot of my friends, men and women, have gotten mugged at gunpoint (one case where the girl who took her purse back would have died if it hadn’t been for a malfunctioning weapon). And this is in the rich area, with a ton of security (in fact, the only reasons they don’t end up dead is because of Homeland Security).

Self-defense is good, but weapons tend to be the great equalizer. You don’t have to be physically strong to use a gun. Even if there are other ways, wouldn’t it be better to be as prepared as possible, including utilizing other methods AND owning a gun?

To be honest, I’d rather be the one telling the police why the guy is leaving with a busted knee rather than end up dead and raped or hear about another girl end up the same way from the same guy.

I think of all those shootings we’ve had recently, on college campuses. God forbid, if something like that happened at my school, I’d be PRAYING someone had a concealed carry-on and would put a stop to it. It always seems, when things like that happen, the cops are waiting outside, trying to negotiate. Well, if the cops aren’t going to run in and stop the killers, then I’ll pull a V (from V for Vendetta) and stop them myself.

Sorry, but I should be able to walk home from work at night without fear, I should be able to defend myself and the people I dearly love, and I shouldn’t have to depend on men or the cops to protect me 24/7. If that takes owning a weapon, so be it.

Personally I believe EVERY woman should carry some sort of self-defense.

Be it a gun, taser, pepper spray, or a knife.

I haven’t seen any proposed gun control legislation biased against women.

We have rape and violence against women and men here too… but no, women are never raped at gunpoint… when there are fights young men may draw an illegal knife and make a wound that is not lethal…
I say, make all arms illegal. When you can buy it on every street corner it makes it so much easier to get the wrong mentality that comes with it…
And no, I do not mean to poke fun at americans… but I do believe the right for everyone to own a gun is a leftover from another time and its not good for anyone.
Anyone can learn karate or self defence or go with a pepper spray…

Totalitarianism is not dead. We have a heavy dose of it here now with the Obama administration. Obama does not like our Constitution, b/c, to paraphrase. it bestows negative rights, or does not allow GOVERNMENT to do enough!! It's not *government* that bestows human rights, it's *God*! Rob

Do you believe people have a right to defend the lives of themselves and others? That they have a right to resist an attacker if they so choose?

Do you really believe martial arts (which takes strength, agility, and lots of practice) is really feasible for the small, old, and handicapped against the young and strong? It doesn’t take much strength or training (apart from basic safety) to shoot a would-be rapist from 7 feet (2m) away.

I have a concealed carry permit and my wife has expressed interest in obtaining one as well.

To the OP, that’s a great pic, btw. I have to show it to my wife.

With all due respect a female most times does not have the strength to defend herself in the way you say. And I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to allow someone to get that close to me. I travel to dog shows alone frequently and my husband does not want me to travel unprotected. I go to the range to practice weekly and am quite proficient with a handgun. There is no way in this country to disarm those who would do harm.

Make all arms illegal except for the few who have a licence to hunt.
There are other ways for women to learn self defence.
In my country in Europe owning a gun is illegal… I find that totally reasonable.
With all due respect, I doubt you would know a cowboy if you saw one. Disagree if you will, but drop the insults.

I agree. I run at least three miles nearly every day and I lift. I played rugby for a semester and took on women bigger than myself. I’ve carried thirty-fifty pounds of silver on my shoulders. However, men have different bone structures, harder bones, more musculature (from more testosterone) and they’re bigger. I’m five three, 120 pounds, and my best guy friend has lifted me over his head (as a joke, but he’s very strong and he doesn’t even work out).

I’m sorry but I’d rather have the freedom to walk freely and know that I can protect myself and those I love. I’d rather walk home at night from work and not have to fear that someone will make off with more than my night’s earnings. I’d rather get home from volunteering in the inner city and know that my parents will not have to see my face on the 11 PM news. And for my dear friend who promised to take a bullet for me, I pray he never has to for ANYONE because I’d rather put an end to the one who tries than see anyone dear to me get killed and not be able to do anything because I wouldn’t want to break the law.

I love how everyone associates pro-women’s rights with gun control. To me, as a woman, I want to be able to protect myself and seek justice than rely on a court system where the guy walks free or a phone call to the cops I may not have time to make.

Knife wounds are not lethal? It is illegal to sell gun on “street corners” in the USA. Except for private sales which are limited to one per month, a person must have a federal firearms dealer license in order to sell firearms. Firearms cannot be sent via mail or any other package courier service except between licensed dealers and manufacturers.

How many 120 pound woman have the time to learn and stay current with karate or other unarmed self-defense techniques wel enough to fight off a 200 pound attacker? If you have ever been sprayed by pepper spray you would know that unless you get it directly into the eyes, which is difficult, it will not stop anyone. Even then, there are some people who, even when hit directly in the eyes with pepper spray, are not really affected too much by it.

Several years ago, I attended a demonstration put on by the local police of their non-lethal teachinques. I had the experience of being sprayed in the eyes with pepper spray, tasered and shot with a bean-bag. The pepper spray only made me tear up. To the surprise of the police, it really did not have much of an affect on me. The taser was rather unconfortable yet it did not stop me or make me fall. Of the three people who were tasered, only one of us fell. The other person was stopped, but only while being shocked. Finally, I was shot in the upper chest with the bean-bag round at a distance of about 25 yards. It left a bruise, but did not stop me either. I am not impressed with the non-lethal stuff. I should add that I am a very largely built man.

It is a myth that smaller woman can, in general, reliably defend themselves against a larger male aggressor. It is a proven fact that any person can defend themselves against an aggressor with a firearm.

My mom also worried that pepper spray could be used against me.

A few of my friends told me to use keys and kick (I’m a runner and my legs are certainly not frail), I carry a pocket knife (but I worry that it could be used against me), but I can’t own a gun (because my city forbids it and I’m a college student, so I can’t even own a concealed carry-on). I want to. I’d take all the classes and learn how to be safe as possible, as on target as I could.

It’s surprising that someone as liberal as I am, as socially active, as rabidly against the death penalty and pro-life in other ways, as someone who opposes the war in Iraq, as someone who has the reputation of “Catholic hippie” in her family, as someone who sincerely hopes Obama and Biden become pro-life because she thinks they are awesome otherwise, that I would be as pro-gun as I am. But “liberal” comes from “libera” or “free”. I should be able to walk freely, as a woman, and not be treated as property. I should be free to protect the people I love. And if, God forbid it happened at my school, I’d want to be able to take control and put a stop to it, rather than wait for police, who won’t be able to do much by the time they arrive.

This is what I’m thinking. I weigh all of 100 pounds, 105 on a good day. The only time I have ever weighed more than 110 is while pregnant, and of course, I doubt any 9-month pregnant woman who weighs 135 pounds, with 2 small children in tow, would be able to karate-chop a 200 pound attacker.

No way.

While we’re all talking about firearms and personal protection, can I get a few opinions? I tried to shoot my husband’s new Beretta 9mm a few days ago, and my hand is too small for the grip. I can’t reach the trigger and pull it back all the way, because my fingers aren’t long enough (I lack the leverage/strength required to fully squeeze the trigger). I can fire it if my husband pulls the hammer back first, because that first pull is longer without the hammer back, but obviously that carries risks that I’m not comfortable with. Any handgun recommendations for a woman with really small hands? My ring size (left ring finger) is 3.5, to give you an idea of how tiny I am. I would prefer to have more than 6 shots (revolver) available to me, in case I need to use 'em.

My sister uses a shotgun, because as she says, “Anyone who looks up the barrel of that gun knows that I don’t have to aim.” Obviously shotguns are no good for concealed carry. 😃 I would like to be able to conceal carry.

Thank you!!

(Oh, and a big apology to MelensDad if you think I’m too much off topic. :o )

There are a number of things to consider. Personally, I would recommend this forum: familyfriendsfirearms.com/forum/ It is a good firearms site and you can get some well informed and experienced opinions there. You will also find that there are a number of people, such as myself and the OP who also frequent that forum.

My opinion, for what it’s worth, is that you should consider a small semi-auto or perhaps a small revolver intended for concealed-carry. A small hand should be able to hold these fairly well. Go to a decent gun shop and try the trigger pull. Also, if you look on-line at various manufacturer sites, many will have, as part of the spec, the amount of force, in pounds, it takes to pull the trigger.

Thank you! I’ll respond shortly.

Duly bookmarked. 🙂

Thanks! Obviously, I have quite a bit of research to do… I really appreciate the help. 😃
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition…and the IWB holster, and the spare mags, and the concealed-carry permit, and…
