Most of you who wrote in this thread are completely right - firearms are best way to be
self-confident, feel safe and free. Especially for women.
I live in country where not only pistols and revolvers are strictly forbidden, but right to defend your own PROPERTY is forbidden too. There is no way to feel safe, and russian laws are great joy to criminals, robbers thieves etc. They know that almost no one can blast them (depraved members of russian government can, they have firearms, armored cars and security guards), and police won’t catch them, and if even catch, court won’t punish them.
This is such a great thing - when woman which seemed defenceless suddenly pulls the gun and turns criminal who wants to hurt, rob and rape into sidewalk meat… (I am NOT some kind of maniac! Those who had been in situation when gun was needed, will understand me. criminals need to be eleiminated forever to let us, Christian people live in peace).
I want to say to all people from U.S.A who read this: stand for your rights, and don’t let someone to turn your country to cattleland like russia is.

I may be wrong on this, but I believe in some areas in the US it is illegal to carry pepper spray or mace.
In my area, I have to have it registered…

Seriously, I have guy friends who can just lift me up by my arm…assuming a street attacker is that big (avg. height and size for a guy) while I’m my own height and weight (5’3 and 118 lb), I don’t care that I’ve had rugby training, that I run almost every day, and that I work in a job that requires me to hoist 50 lb over my shoulder (waiting tables also requires you to carry ice and silverware in your spare time)…I’m no match for a guy who’s not only bigger, he’s naturally stronger just due to being a guy.

What am I going to do? Use my pointy shoes, umbrella and handbag? Because, with my keys and knife, that’s all I got.

I’m a big woman, 5’8" and 265 pounds, and I would not be able to fight off an attacker. I don’t have the physical strength, even though I lift weights. And I have bad osteoarthritis in my knees, so I don’t have the speed to run away.

I don’t carry a gun (it’s against the law in Illinois–we are one of the two states without a concealed-carry law).

Hand-to-hand vs. a gun? Oh, that’s just ridiculous. The gun will win every time. It doesn’t matter if it’s a woman or a man–their self-defence methods will not work against a gun fired by a criminal. Lots of strong male athletes have been shot dead lately.

I keep thinking of that scene from one of the Indiana Jones movies where the bad guy is posturing and getting all ready to pull some kind of martial arts move on Indy, and Indy gets tired of watching him and just shoots him.

If karate or other martial arts or hand-to-hand techniques were more effective than guns, then our military wouldn’t carry guns to Iraq.

If guns were made illegal, they would still be sold illegally. It would be just like prohibition all over again, a nightmare of smuggling and gang wars and crime. Horrific. Prohibition of anything breeds crime.

Besides, at this point the U.S. Constitution still guarantees the right of citizens to bear arms. Any laws making guns illegal would probably be struck down as unconstitutional.

Good thread…Living isolated, nice to have an “Annie Oakley” ridin’ on the hip.
Not for fear of wild animals, but as a wise precaution in case of a wild, psycho person
crossing one’s trail.
Some women also need to empower themselves with learning good body language, and other forms of self defense while walking in a city.

Your words are quite moving.
May you and your loved ones be safe from any harm. God Bless You and Yours.

We have rape and violence against women and men here too… but no, women are never raped at gunpoint… when there are fights young men may draw an illegal knife and make a wound that is not lethal…
I say, make all arms illegal. When you can buy it on every street corner it makes it so much easier to get the wrong mentality that comes with it…
And no, I do not mean to poke fun at americans… but I do believe the right for everyone to own a gun is a leftover from another time and its not good for anyone.
Anyone can learn karate or self defence or go with a pepper spray…
I am sorry but this is complete junk. The city I live in is poor, and gang ridden. There were many shootings, usually gang activity or drug deals, and there were many stabbings, mainly domestic fights or attacks against women. Last year almost everyone who got shot lived. Even the guy that got shot in his back and head in the parking lot of my apartment building. But almost everyone who got stabbed died. 🤷

Why the disparity in lethality in my city? I don’t know. But a knife is silent and no one might even know the crime has happened, so medical response time is probably slower. Also with a knife you are closer so it is harder to miss and it is easy to stab a victim multiple times. Most of the people who got stabbed were women. I know a martial art that I studied in college, but I don’t think I would have an effective defence against a gun, knife, a group of people, or an unarmed large man.

I moved from Chicago, IL where the gun laws are very strict to TN where the laws are comparatively loose. What a difference! I notice far less gun related crime. The drivers are more respectful. An armed society is a polite society.

I would never touch a gun. I’m probably the most nonviolent person you would ever meet but I’ve taken self defense classes twice just to be prepared it something did happen. I recommend them in any case. It’s just the smart thing to do. 👍

Well, different strokes for different folks. So, that is ok too.

Raised to have to hunt either with a 40lb bow, or a good rifle in order for all of us to
have meat on the table. Not always carried for the “what if” scenario of defending
oneself.
That is great that you had the courage and wisdom to attend some self defense
courses.😉

LOL my DH says the director wanted to have a big fight scene, but Harrison Ford had bad diarrhea the day they filmed that scene so he couldn’t do all the martial arts moves he was supposed to do. I like the way it came out tho cause it’s just hilarious. 😃

I have my concealed weapons permit at the insistence of my DH and carry a gun when I am out in public, except when I’m working, which is probably when I need it the most. I work at a group home in a pretty scummy neighborhood. Just the other day there was a fight on the street right outside the house. I don’t carry there because it’s against agency policy, and I would be too worried that I would get into a restraint with a client or it would get stolen by a client. 🤷

I’m pro 2nd Amendment; however, if the girl’s dad has a shotgun, that still concerns me.

America= Cowboy land…

Make all arms illegal except for the few who have a licence to hunt.
There are other ways for women to learn self defence.
In my country in Europe owning a gun is illegal… I find that totally reasonable.
Which country in Europe is your home? Quite frankly, you owe us “cowboys” for the fact that you are not forced to speak German or Russian.

You’re welcome.

I live in El Paso, which shares it’s border with our “sister city” Juarez, Mexico. Yesturday, an El Paso man and his 3rd grade son were visiting family accross the border and were gunned down in the street. They actually ran after the little boy and shot him in the back. It will not surprise me to learn that the whole thing was drug related, but still this is a new low.

This morning a local radio program had a man from Juarez call in about the incident and lamented the fact that the biggest problem with the violence in Mexico right now is the fact that the people are sitting ducks. They have no way to defend themselves because gun ownership is illegal. It is amazing however that that fact doesn’t seem to stop the criminals from having guns, so who suffers? The law abiding citizen.

The 2nd amendment is the muscle behind the constitution. Without it, the rest is just a nice philosophy.

Thank you for understandining, Rose5.
An armed society is a polite society.
And unarmed society is a definitely nightmare. Especially when they have no idea about how to live in human way.

I totally disagree with your words.

When bolsheviks overpowered russia in 1917, one of their first political actions was to take all guns from their owners (to prevent possible opposition resistance and to be free in robbing the citizens - they eliminated right to have private property). Guns were allowed before this, and they became forbidden until present days, russian society is still unarmed, and will be, what’s about it? This made things only worse than they could be. By official statistics, moscow has 3rd place amongst most corrupted by crime towns (in all world); every day there are many victims who are beaten by criminals and knocked down by drunken drivers; hospitals are overfilled, there is no even place for those who need treatment.
But criminals in uniform - russian policemen of course have firearms and right to use them. And they do, on innocents. It is common “fun” for them to get drunk and shot somebody, or rape a woman, or kick somebody almost to death with drunken laughing. They get nothing for their crimes because they have damn uniform, and there is no adequate way to confront those ba##ards (only in rare cases they got their punishnment; one russian drunken policemen tried to kidnap a girl to rape her. People passed by confronted him; and finally uniformed criminal got knife right in the neck, but unfortunately, survived.)
There is no way to buy a pistol or revolver; “firearms” shooting rubber bullets are extremely hard to be bought because they need license which is almost impossible to get (and they are much more expensive than real firearms in U.S.A.) but criminals always can buy even a machinegun or bazooka.
Honest citizens in most cases can’t defend themselves, and if they do (with melee weapons or hunting rifles which are allowed for hunters) and won’t hide themselves from police, they are thrown into prisons (russian policemen are uniformed criminals, and they are in alliance with not-uniformed ones).
russia is example of “how NOT to do” to all the world. Its laws are most comfortable for criminals.
To forbid firearms in country where they had been a tradition undoubtly means turn life into a horrible trying of survival.

Sanctamaria -
If you use your keys to defend yourself, it is likely they will rip into your hands and cut you instead of your attacker. This has been demonstrated by self-defense experts, who advise no one to use their keys. HOWEVER, there are such things called kubaton (kubotan?) and submission keychains. I have one. You attach it to your keyring, and grip the grooved shaft in a clenched fist as you walk alone. If someone were to attack you, their are two methods used for defense. For close-up attacks from behind, slam the pointy end down hard onto any reachable body part of your attacker. It is debilitatingly painful. For a face-on attack, keep the keychain in your grip while swinging hard at the face of your attacker. Let the keys swing as an extension of your arm for maximum damage. The point of the kubaton and submission keychain is to surprise and flee, not to overpower (as in some self-defense methods). And you do not need a permit, since it is a non-lethal weapon.

With all that said, I am a big supporter of women carrying concealed weapons to protect themselves. Dying as a Christian martyr for the sake of the Kingdom is something that might be asked of any of us who are Jesus’ followers, but being senselessly brutalized and slaughtered is not something Jesus insisted upon as part of following Him. Becoming a martyr is NOT the same as becoming a victim of violent crime such as rape or murder (although martyrs also suffer violence). With the spiritual and emotional suffering that rape victims experience years after the attack, I would hope to God that Christian women would never be condemned for fighting (even for killing) their attacker in order to prevent such a crime with devastating consequences. Some situations might call for passivity in the face of violence in order to survive, but other situations might call for deadly force, and no one should be prevented from or judged for doing whatever it takes to stay alive.

I beat up a man about 4 or 5 times my size when I was about 15 years old. He was my brother in law and he tried to rape me when I was babysitting his kids. He was always bragging about his black belt in taewando, but when he tried to attack me, I with no formal training in self defense took him down. He had managed to tear my pants trying to get to my private area, and I caught him in a head lock, dug my knee into his throat, pulled on his hair until it was coming out in chunks, and I ruthlessly kicked him where the sun doesn’t shine, until he was rolling on the floor in pain and couldn’t get up. He was a fellow catholic too and I was not about to passively let him have his way and be a nice polite docile woman doing everything to not offend my attacker just because he was a man and an adult and I a female and a child. He was even a police officer at that. My sister begged me not to file charges though and had him checked into a drug rehab facility, but before I withdrew the charges, there was a formal statement made and the whole local police department found out about it. I wish I had filed charges though because he went on to molest and rape other young girls and women, none of whom filed charges and now he teaches drivers education and has on his web site “Who better to trust your child with than an ex police officer” The whole thing makes me sick. I thought the christian thing to do was to listen to my sister and drop the charges, but now I wish I hadn’t. Maybe he could have gotten some real help in the prison and other women would have been protected.

If that brute had been locked in prison, raped by other criminals and beaten by them to death, it would be the best thing. World need to be cleaned from such dirt.
At least I hope that he will get .45 bullet one day from would-be victim.
