I am new to the forum, just happening upon it in a general search; however, I do have a question: I was recently at Mass and our pastor gave a homily on a subject I found most upsetting - women being ordained as preists. He urged us to take prayer cards on the end of each pew from a group known as “Call to Action,” and told us to support them in whichever way we felt comfortable doing so. When I looked this group up online, I was very distressed. I feel that this is not within our Catholic teaching at all. What should I do? Although I am a devout Catholic, I have never become involved in the politics of the Church. Any and all advice would be appreciated.

report him to the bishop. If you want, send me a pm adn I will help you. [Edited]

That is a bit premature. Perhaps Panda should talk to the priest first about his or her concerns.
True. I did jump the gun. IT just seems like preists who endorse heresy never want to talk about why they are wrong.

I have too much old school in me. 😃

Call To Action is a heretical group.

Here is a snippet of info. I found on a website:

The most visible dissenting group which is a movement of laity and religious seeking to reform the “sinful structure” of the “patriarchal” Church. One could call them the “mother of all dissenting groups” - feminist pun intended. CTA is infamous since its 1994 conference coverage on the CBS news program 60 Minutes. CTA promotes dissent against Church teachings on a broad front, including women’s ordination, homosexuality, creation spirituality, married priesthood, and liturgical reforms, while incorporating new age and Wiccan spirituality. Bishop Bruskewitz excommunicated those that belong to this group in his Diocese.

Not only must you notify the bishop at once (and send him one of the prayer cards) – you must talk about this with as many of your fellow parishioners as possible. Download statements of what CTA stands for from the Internet and hand out copies to the parishioners you know, with your own appeal that Catholics not be misled by this heretical group.

Don’t bother trying to dissuade your pastor – he knows already it’s a dissident group. Only talk with him if you plan to tell him you’re going to do your best to stop CTA.

Call To Action is an evil group, and women cannot be ordained as Priests. Talk to the Priest, and if that fails, send a letter to the Bishop. But whatever you do, don’t tell the Priest or the Bishop how to do their jobs, nor insult them - just tell them the problem.

Report him to the bishop. CTA is heretical. Attend a different parish.

He is either ignorant of or in defiance to the Church’s constant teaching on this subject, which is that the Church cannot ordain women. The Church simply has neither permission, right, nor power to do so. The recent documents Inter Insigniores and Ordinatio Sacerdotalis (both post-Vatican II) make this issue very clear. OS is an Apostolic Letter of Pope John Paul II which he ends (n. 4) with an infallible proclamation:Wherefore, in order that all doubt may be removed regarding a matter of great importance, a matter which pertains to the Church’s divine constitution itself, in virtue of my ministry of confirming the brethren (cf. Lk 22:32) I declare that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church’s faithful.
That this is your pastor is more distressing. I would strongly urge you to speak with him and let him know that the Church has already settled this matter; print out copies of the two documents to give to him, if you wish.

Two more strikes: CTA is not Catholic, despite whatever they might say to the contrary. They are a dangerous, heretical, dissenting group which is seeking to destroy the Church and create a new Church which matches their personal ideologies, most of which are not consonant with Catholic morality or tradition. AND, the pastor telling you to support them however you feel comfortable? Pastors are guardians of souls. This pastor sounds wishy-washy and deceived to me. 😦

If the pastor does not accept what you present to him, take two prayer cards and mail one to your bishop along with a written account of what you remember from his homily and what he said to you in your conversation.

FYI, the Bishop of Lincoln, Neb excommunciated the members of Call to Action within his diocese.

The Vatican upheld the excommunication.
“The judgment of the Holy See is that the activities of Call to Action in the course of these years are in contrast with the Catholic faith due to views and positions held which are unacceptable from a doctrinal and disciplinary standpoint,”.

You must report this priest to the Bishop immediately. He is supporting heresy and is attempting to spread this heresy to his parishioners. This is a very serious issue. Call to Action is nothing more then a heretical group attempting to redefine the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Such an act of heresy must be reported so that this priest is no longer in a position where he could endanger souls.

You may also want to let the priest, bishop, and others you know in the church that you are praying for Call to Action members; that they will reunite with the Church and see the error of their ways.

Under how much rock would a priest have to be buried to remain ignorant of the Church’s stand on ordination of women?

99% of the time, I’m in favor of seeking clarification from the priest before going to his bishop and/or superior. This is not one of those times. It is beyond the pale. Or, to put it this way: unlike accidental mistakes, I think his bishop would want to know, needs to know, and has a right to be informed of every single incident like this.

The Blarney stone? Stonehenge? Peter? 😉 No, if any priest is under Peter, he couldn’t be ignorant of this.

If you report this to the bishop, you ought to provide some evidence for what you say. You might send him a copy of the prayer card this priest asked people to take. If there are others who will verify what you say, you could also have them sign the letter if they will, or at least provide their names. Personally, if someone makes an accusation against someone without any evidence, I disregard it, though I don’t know what course the bishop is accustomed to doing in such a case.
I agree that you should take further steps, unless this is in discord with your personal way of life…
Since the 1960s some priests and religious have become dissentors from Catholic beliefs. Hopefully you will not see even worse. When I go to a parish when travelling, I am not sure what I will find, though more often when I have been surprised, I have found things to admire rather than otherwise,

Yes, the actual evidence is far more valuable than hearsay. Still, the person reporting is a first-person witness.

Any call from a priest that his parishioners ‘support’ CTA is way wrong. How much error and confusion he could cause from one homily!

I would be very careful about doing what most of the folks are urging you to do. This comes under “know your parish, know your Diocese.” Where I live, CTA is not only tolerated but is embraced in some parishes. I did, just as some replying to your post have urged you to do. I got handed my head and I am barely acknowleded in the local church. The priest at this particular church is very open about being a member of CTA and the folks that run the church are very supportive. There are very few Sundays that don’t include some sort of encouragement for women to become priests or allowing priests to marry. Anyway, be very certain that you will be able to handle the fall-out from whatever you say to the Bishop. GOD BLESS!
