Women bishops using "apostolic succession" to validate their vocations?

RCWP claims to stand in “apostolic succession” based on the validity of the episcopal ordination of their founding bishop: The ordinations of Roman Catholic Womenpriests are valid because of our unbroken line of apostolic succession within the Roman Catholic Church. The principal consecrating Roman Catholic male bishop who ordained our first women bishops is a bishop with a line of unbroken apostolic succession within the Roman Catholic Church in full communion with the Pope. Therefore, our bishops validly ordain deacons, priests and bishops. Consequently, all qualified candidates, including baptized ministers and priests from other Christian traditions, who are presented to our bishops for ordination are ordained by the laying on of hands into the same line of apostolic succession in the Roman Catholic Church.(2)

How exactly can they use “apostolic succession” to support their vocation when they’re going against the teaching that only men can be priests, deacons, etc?

Good question. Even a valid bishop cannot and never could ordain a woman a priest. This is because the bishop accomplishes the outward sign; the inward grace comes from God, in this case the grace of being ordained, and He (the Lord God) does not give that to women. We cannot force his hand. Not even a bishop could.

They can’t. It’s merely a vain attempt to rationalize and justify their existence, and it fails miserably. There is no justification whatsoever for the existence of priestesses, much less bishopesses. Where the candidate is female, any attempt at an “ordination” is invalid, and this is not simply a matter of Church discipline. It is, rather, a matter of immutable Tradition which, as even the late Pontiff said, cannot be changed.

👍 For them to rely on the outward sign alone is reductionistic, making it like a children’s game of tag. It’s ironic, IMO, that one of the reasons these women give for wanting to be ordained is that women are intellectually capable of just as much as men. True, of course, women are intelligent. But this sort of illogical thinking is not.

They want to square the circle: to gain the respect due to the ordained of the Catholic Church while violating the rules associated with it. In a religion, which is rule-based! Good luck with that, I sez! They hate the male hierarchy while wanting it to validate their nonsense. They want to play dress up and pontificate.

It’s just vanity. They’re protestants. Nothing to see here, move along.

Good points all. :thumbsup:However, re your last sentence: Of course, there does remain the slight problem that they want to call themselves Catholics, and want other Catholics to affirm that and rally behind their cause, and put pressure on the Church hierarchy. So we have to address the issue, we can’t just ignore it and hope it’ll go away. :nope:

If we do, they’ll influence those with weak catechesis and touchy-feely watered-down faith to support them; their numbers and influence will swell and then we have even bigger problems.:sad_yes: This is what has happened in society in general about “gay marriage.”

A valid bishop can’t ordain women as priests/esses any more than a valid priest can make Twinkies and Coca-Cola the body and blood of Christ. Matter *and *form are important, not just the latter.

You noticed. I read the first part of the article & when I started getting totally bored at their attempt of claiming apostolic succession…I began to scan. I didn’t see a thing in the article about serving God, serving His poor creatures, etc. etc. More of my own sex who believe that men are superior & if they can DO what men DO, they will be “equal” to these superior creatures. And they call that “feminism”. How ridiculous. :nope:

Good way of putting it. 👍

Rosemary Radford Reuther has a huge radical feminist ax to grind. I found reading her take on the early church(es) very akin to reading Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code.:ehh:

Hey, at least “Womenpriests” is making a somewhat humorously inept attempt to justify themselves. It could be worse. One “bishop” of the “Gnostic Orthodox Church” said he didn’t need to be ordained because he already had been in a previous life.

(Sorry for making the discussion even more depressing.)

Well, it makes a sort of sense . . .:whacky:

Or perhaps another word might be “surreal” . . .:bigyikes:

As long as we’re on the topic of reincarnation, let the record show that I wish to come back as a pampered housecat.😛

They need to make that claim to gain any semblance of legitimacy, including calling themselves Roman Catholic.
Not just because one makes a claim means the claim is legitimate.

It’s a pain in the patoot for the rest of us though. Here’s why:

Say you’re Average Joe or Jane Citizen. You see these groups in the media - “Roman Catholic Womenpriests.” “Catholics for a Free Choice” (on abortion). You think - “Oh! They have ‘Catholic’ in their name, so apparently Catholics are becoming ‘enlightened’ about these issues - it’s about time!”

We have laws that prohibit using copyrighted licensed characters for profit by those not affiliated with the corporations that own the copyrights to them. They can’t be resold or used to endorse a cause, make new artwork, etc. without risking huge lawsuits.

And for good reason. Bootlegged Mickey Mouses (Mice?) or team mascots sold at undercut prices on street corners undercut the copyright holder’s profits. There is also the risk of images being used inappropriately, for example in pornographic ways or associated with drug abuse. It happens, yes, but at least there is legal recourse if the perps can be caught.

But any yahoo can take the name of the Holy Catholic Church and misuse it for their purposes. This is wrong. And yet, the Church does not, perhaps cannot, sue them. 🤷

I dunno. I’m not a Church policymaker nor am I a lawyer familiar with whether, under the guise of religion, there would be any possible way to copyright the term “Roman Catholic.” My guess is that it’d be pretty difficult if not impossible. It’d be like trying to copyright the words “Christian,” “Jewish,” “Islamic,” “Hindu,” etc.

However. Though these people might try to deceive by using the Church’s name and trying to imply they are under Her umbrella, we who care have a powerful weapon - the ability to speak out an correct such errors. In fact, we have an obligation to do so. :sad_yes:

Another thing is that RCWP never tell you who the bishop is. We’re supposed to take their word for it that there was a bishop there, let alone accept their testimony that he is a bishop in good standing in the Church? This of course isn’t meant to lend credence to their idea that even if a bishop is there they enjoy valid apostolic succession.

Didn’t they get their supposed Apostolic Succession from an Old Catholic Bishop?

I made the same proposal in some other thread like 2-3 months ago. Well, our priests and bishops are theologians, philosophers and other religion related studies. We don’t have marketing majors, at least in the higher ups. We should have trademarked “Catholic” a long time ago. Perhaps we can still claim it today on the basis of antiquity?

RCWP is hardly the biggest problem. Many have used the Catholic name to try and feign legitimacy to their group. From Sedevacantists to liberals, from schismatics to heretics. Having the word “Catholic” in their name is an effort to pry away a few unwilling, poorly catechized Catholics into their own fold.

Of course they never tell. And whether it was done by a “real bishop” or not doesn’t make any difference: those priestesses (much less the bishopesses) could never have been validly ordained in the first place. Who put on the show is of no consequence. My left foot has more Apostolic Succession than those charlatans will ever have.
