The Nuns and Sisters do seem to be growing again, remarkeably. On NBC4 last night they had a very positive feature on young women entering the convent. It was good too see.

However, there is still just 1 sister per 750,000 Catholics in the US. So we must pray for many more such stories!

Here in the UK it doesn’t look too good either, although immigrant communities are bolstering the numbers, particularly the Missionaries of Charity.

Amazing now all we need is more priest.
and male religious…and men who are neither priests nor religious, but are celibate (there seems to be little appreciation for the lay single vocation, however, it is a true vocation with joys and sorrows like all other vocations).

The Dominican sisters are bursting at the seams, and the habited Franciscans and Carmelites are doing well. While the Benedictines and other habit-less communities, which still constitute the majority of American religious, are graying out and vanishing before our eyes…

I didn’t know there were habit-less communities…perhaps they should advertise that more! That might draw some people in who don’t want to wear a hot habit but are otherwise religious…

Most of the communities today seem to be habitless…some are optional, and some others are i guess you could say mix and match. The Sisters who ran by grade school, the IHM Sisters, worse a blue habit but many elected not to wear the head piece ( i dont know the word…)
