Women on one side, men on the other

Back in my home town - a small one- on the other side of the planet, when we went to mass, women would be sitting on left side, and men on the right side.

I don’t know about little baby, but I remember when I was about 4 years ago, I had to sit with bunch of other kids and my mom was way on the other side of the church. The church was very small, but to me my mother was about 1 mile away from me.

I was wondering where the idea comes from. Did it ever be like this at another country’s church?

It used to be done in my hometown cathedral in Ireland. To this day the older people call the left side of the cathedral the “women’s side”. I don’t know when it stopped.

This reminds me of a situation that happened in my area. A new church was built with a full immersion baptismal that had a “fountain” feature. Water flowed along the wall into the infant baptismal and then into the full immersion baptismal.

After the church opened the pastor noticed that most of the women were sitting on one side of the church. When he inquired as too why the women were sitting on that side of the church, they informed him that the sound of the baptismal made them need to go to the bathroom.
