Women participating during the mass?

I have a friend who is a woman who constantly tells me that the Catholic church should not allow women to participate in any form during the church service. She then quotes 1 Corinthians 14: 34-35 “women should keep silent in the churches, for they are not allowed to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. But if they want to learn anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is improper for a woman to speak in the church.”

Could I have some help explaining to her what the Catholic Church believes on this? Thanks.

I am a faithful practicing Catholic and I agree, to some extent, with what your friend is saying. God does intend men and women to have different roles in the Church, the family, and society. This principle is found in Sacred Scripture and it cannot be nullified by a rule permitting women to be lectors or emhCs.

The Magisterium has not definitively decided the question of women’s roles at Mass, but I think that it is already clear from Scripture that men and women are not to have the same roles. As for the current rule permitting women to have certain roles, such rule does not constitute a teaching of the Magisterium.
