I am curious about wearing the womens head-covering (mantilla) to Mass or to church. Does anybody here wear one? Should I wear one? Anybody have any background info on the Catholic use of mantillas or where I could buy one?

Thank you šŸ™‚

There are, to borrow from Mother Bernadette, oodles and oodles of threads about the same exact topic in this forum. In any case, a ā€œhead coveringā€ is not necessarily a mantilla.

I’d like to wear a mantilla but I don’t own one. There is a group here called Veiled in Grace, you should check it out… i think this is the link.forums.catholic-questions.org/group.php?groupid=496
A few years ago the ladies in ā€˜all’ churches wore hats. Hats are no longer in style.
1Cor.11:1-16 covers it all. It’s either a veil, hat or long hair. šŸ™‚
Then again, others refer to this as the custom of the time in which we live.
Oneness Pentecostals do not allow their ladies to cut their hair. Hair is their covering. I view this as legalism.
We are saved by grace through faith, so that no one can boast. Eph.2:8-9
btw, I think the lacy veils are pretty. šŸ™‚

God bless,

My wife always wears head covering, whether it be a TLM or a NO Mass. When we attend the local NO we usually sit with a small group of trads that always kneel for communion, women wear head coverings and we genuflect.

Its a small group but it is growing in size slowly.

Hi, LifeInSunshine,

Yes, there is a supportive for headcovering women’s group here at CAF: forums.catholic-questions.org/group.php?groupid=413 – some cover for Mass, and some cover outside of Mass, and some are there just to see what it’s all about. šŸ™‚

Lizanne – I had no idea there was another group! The more the merrier!

You don’t have to wear one, it’s a personal devotion (I believe this is the correct term) but I know from reading here that in more traditional churches women are more likely to wear a headcovering so if you went to one of those you might feel more comfortable wearing one. I personally don’t wear one because no one else at my church does and I think I’d look dumb being the only one, and because I don’t have to lol. Like others have said some women wear hats or mantillas, and I know some women on here actually wear hijabs and cover in everyday life. It’s all up to you and what you feel you’re called to do (or not do) šŸ™‚

I may speak out of turn, but as far as I know, women/ girls wear a mantilla or headcovering as a sign of obedience to their husbands/ fathers who is the head of their households in following the writings of St Paul which says

Wives, give way to your husbands as you would in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and treat them with gentleness".

It baffles me how with the gender equality rubbish, that most women I have met still wants to be treated as ladies and have the man open the door for them etc, but will not submit to his authority as the man in their lives and show it by following the lesson given by St Paul.

I can only speak for myself when I say that I do not have a husband nor a father in my life to show a sign of obediance to, so don’t be so quick to judge any lady who does not wear a headcovering but wants to be treated with respect.

Personally, I go by 1 Corinthians 11:1-17:

*Be ye followers of me, as I also am of Christ. Now I praise you, brethren, that in all things you are mindful of me and keep my ordinances as I have delivered them to you. But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ: and the head of the woman is the man: and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered disgraceth his head. But every woman praying or prophesying with her head not covered disgraceth her head: for it is all one as if she were shaven. For if a woman be not covered, let her be shorn. But if it be a shame to a woman to be shorn or made bald, let her cover her head. The man indeed ought not to cover his head: because he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man [c.f. Genesis 2-3]. For the man was not created for the woman: but the woman for the man. Therefore ought the woman to have a power over her head, because of the angels. But yet neither is the man without the woman, nor the woman without the man, in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man, so also is the man by the woman: but all things of God. You yourselves judge. Doth it become a woman to pray unto God uncovered? Doth not even nature itself teach you that a man indeed, if he nourish his hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman nourish her hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering. But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor the Church of God . Now this I ordain: not praising you, that you come together, not for the better, but for the worse

Therefore, I won’t enter a Church without a head covering, be it a Mantilla, hijab or scarf.

Sorry about the lengthy post!

I’m starting to feel called to cover my head in church and i’m not even a catholic yet. I’m converting one day and I feel called to cover my head and wear skirts. I will slowly make my change to dressing modestly and covering my head. I just hope the good lord puts it in my Mother’s heart to accept my change… Good luck! The day I get to join the church and take first communion, I will wear a all white dress and a long white mantilla veil! I want to present myself to our lord at his table totally pure and honest.

Good for you! šŸ‘

It’s going to be hard for your mother. Have patience with that. I myself am not a convert, but my very Protestant mother-in-law thinks I’m a loon. We simply don’t discuss Religion. šŸ˜‰

Good luck with your spiritual journey!

Speaking as a man, mantillas are good. They really mask the age and beauty of the woman, from behind and from the side. It’s less distracting. Or more, if you’re trying to work out if she’s pretty, when you shouldn’t be šŸ˜‰

Be nice if men could wear hoods, but that the privilege of monks and friars, I think. Horse-blinkers for men!

If you do choose to wear a veil or other type of headcovering, please be wary against any tendency to think poorly of those women who choose not to do so. I have seen this type of thing into a tool of Satan whereby he traps individuals into thinking that they are somehow better than others because they do a certain external act. The act is neutral, the intention is key. Headcovering or no headcovering, God is interested in the soul. Refer to the New Testement treatment on the necessity of males to be circumcised. You will find the circumcision of the heart is what is required. Some may think this is no big deal. Most men would disagree.

I wear one šŸ™‚ Check out the Catholic Traditions store on Ebay, they’re absolutely beautiful and the lady who sells them is so sweet she mailed me another for free when mine got lost in the mail. Plus she might include a pamphlet with it! I plan to buy a black one from her to wear after I get married one day.

Definitely in the Bible. I try to always wear mine, but once I spontaneously visited a cathedral and didn’t wear one, and didn’t feel like God was upset with me or anything.

Don’t wear one until you think that God is asking you to. Devoutness that you force upon yourself never works. I was so ashamed to wear mine; I had initially planned to try it out when I planned to make a long drive to a Latin Mass, but that Wednesday at choir practice the director volunteered me to cantor almost every song. The situation was crazy, the Mass was packed, at a massive 10:30 Mass, and there was I, the only one wearing a mantilla, for the first time ever!! God never lets us make the plans, every time I tried to plan out carrying out what I got from prayers that He wanted me to do, He pulled the rug out from under my feet and had me do it His way.

For me it was a source of shame for a while, I was so mortifyingly embarrassed to wear one that I worried every day all day about it. Then I said the sorrowful mystery and got a little insight like it was my crown of thorns, and my worry was like the Agony in the Garden, but one billionth of what Jesus went through. After that I had no issues, He went through far more than me wearing a little lacy thing that actually looks pretty šŸ™‚

Btw I wear it at Novus Ordo Masses (the ones I always go to). For every stare and rude remark you’ll get two compliments and a happy smile that you know is warming the heart of an older person back to the beautiful traditions of the not-so-destroyed past. Also you’ll get a beautiful chance to introduce something to younger girls who think it’s so pretty, and every one will ask you why you wear it… šŸ‘ Best opportunity ever šŸ™‚

God bless!

You might also find the following website useful: Will You Mantilla With Me? at www.mantillawithme.com

It’s designed for young Catholic women thinking of wearing the mantilla to mass. You’ll find a summary of the reasons women wear it and links to places online where you can buy it.

I’ve recently started wearing the mantilla to daily mass - it helps me to be more reverent and to really focus on Our Lord.

I’d be interested in hearing about what you decide!
