Women who wear head coverings?

Do any of you gals wear head coverings daily, outside of mass? What kind of covering do you wear–scarf, snood, veil, something else? Was it difficult transitioning from being bareheaded to wearing a head covering in public?

I’ve been looking into head coverings in various religions, and I’m starting to want to wear one. Maybe a Jewish tiechel, but I don’t want to be mistaken for Jewish. I was thinking of snoods, since I like those a lot too, but I’m still very afraid of being stared at. I feel that might defeat the purpose of modesty.

Still, I want to wear one because the issue of covering my hair is really weighing on my heart. I feel that this might be the right thing to do, but regardless of what I feel, I am asking just to hear experiences and testimonies, if there are indeed any women out there in cyberland who wear head coverings routinely outside of mass. 😛

I really hope this doesn’t cause any debate, since I know the head covering topic can be tricky. Thank you so much for reading this!

Discerning it all myself.

I went to CVS the other day (drug store, ya know) and found some head scarves. I guess that’s what you call them. They are wide material with elastic. They cover all of the top of my head. I leave my hair showing in the back. Then I got some crocheted looking one that tie. Pink, Brown and Black. I really like those. I don’t think anyone knows that I’m covering…make sense? Because they are in fashion. I wear them to my Parish, because not many women cover with Mantillas. I’m starting to wear them more and more on a daily basis.

I got a black lace one. And two more for everyday wear.

I’ve purchase one tiechel from her. But the cord is rather large and doesn’t stay on well while tied. These are made to go over your ears and the cord is very uncomfortable. I may see about replacing it with some fabric and still be able to use it. The one’s that I linked are made with fabric ties, so I think they will be more comfortable.
 
No no no no no!!! That strikes me as too much, way too much.

Cover your head in church is fine, but to go to the store? No, no no no no!!!

wear them all the time
team cap of whoever we are rooting for at the time (tossed my Ohio State cap it is having a time-out)
wooly cap my mom knitted on our few really cold days when out walking
some really nice straw hats for church in the spring
sun hats - really mandatory down here, even in winter
caps of all the schools represented among our CCD families, if I go to their games I switch hats during the game
we usually have cap for VBS each year so I wear those sometimes too
I often wear a had to church so I can ask the kids, not only what did Father talk about in his homily, but what hat did Miss Annie wear? to check on Mass attendance.

oh, did you mean, am I making a personal statement with headgear? no, only as described above.

oooh I see my favorite, we winter texans get a lot of our exercise in the pool, so we have come up with a waterproof sunhat, you take plastic grocery bags, roll them tight, and crochet them into what looks like a straw hat – yellow from dollar general and blue from local grocery, or red and white, are particularly prized, often with a stripe of orange from home depot

if I was wearing a hat because of a spiritual conviction, I would not be asking permission to do so, or seeking affirmation for doing so, or worrying about the reaction of others when I do so. NB for those who do have a strong spiritual conviction about this, which I honor as long as it is not an excuse to criticize those who have not, my Orthodox Jewish friends sometimes wear wigs for this reason, another option.

I wouldn’t know mine was made by someone else, I am craft challenged. but when you roll them up tight lengthwise they seem to work like raffia strips
 
Although the dress code for our rule of life in the Confraternity of Penitents is tighter than a lot of women’s Religious communities, the unwritten subtext of our Constitutions is “pass for normal.”

I work in a high-end professional environment. No way on earth would I park a chapeu on my knot. In MY cultural environment, modesty would forbid it.
 
Nothing intrinsically wrong with wearing a head covering…i.e. no law Church or state against it. If one were wearing one all the time, people just may talk - but then one cannot stop people from thinking and talking. In due time I think probably a permanent head covering would be accepted and the talkers move on to ‘greener fields’.

in every parish I have belonged to in the last 30 years, some quite liberal, some conservative, most middle of the road, have been several women who commonly wear a veil or hat to church, and never have I heard and critical or disparaging remark passed about them. I think such fears are ungrounded and repeat, anyone who has a real conviction about this, would disregard such ignorance in any case.
 
I would just like to say that I do cover all the time and though some may disagree it is what I am convicted to do as a sign of respect and submission to God. It may not be required but as it is a presonal choice as it is for everyone. I do exspect some to disagree and not understand and may even become anger because of it. But it will not stop me from covering full time. I am not trying to sound harshly or prideful but if you decide that you are going to cover all the time do not let anyone convince you by words or looks or rude remarks to change. As it would not really be any of their business it is between you and God. I myself wear a full traditional covering similar to the amish. that is the covering I chose as I am comfortable with that style, but there are many to choose from. try plain and simple headcoverings.com

I cover full time. If you choose to do so, you will probably get looks, no matter what style you go with. I started out with snoods, in very neutral colors, and have branched out to scarves and tiechels, but I try to keep them subdued, so that it’s drawing undue attention. Everyone has basically gotten over it. Though I’ve gone and confused people by wearing a bigger scarf these past few days because it’s been cold here. I’m thinking about getting a sign to carry around: ‘Just cold, not Muslim.’

If you go to thoseheadcoverings.blogspot.com you’ll find a lot of personal testimonies about it, as well as discussions both for and against, and resources for purchasing or making some of your own. She does link to all headcovering type stories, so you’ll need to look at the tags to see which tradition is being discussed.
 
I cover full time and I dig it. I started with a Jewish-style tichel, and I like that just fine and I wasn’t mistaken for being Jewish (there are not a lot of Orthodox Jewish women out here, so the style is not recognizable). Still, I wanted something a little more “Catholic” in appearance. I picked up a white silk scarf, and when I put it on, it just clicked. It doesn’t look too out of the ordinary and I think it’s beautiful. They’re also not that expensive. You can pick them up at craft stores (they’re painting blanks) for six bucks or so.

I do still wear my tichel plenty, and I wear a regular cotton bandana for very casual occasions or housework. There is a wide variety of coverings available on www.etsy.com.

Not many women in my parish wear traditional mantillas, chapel caps… or the like. But I do see hats and scarves once in a while.

I wanted to cover my head, too. But I don’t “do” hats. lol. And I was afraid of standing out… so I started wearing a wide… cloth… elastic hair band to Mass. I have several, in different colors. It covers the top of my head pretty well. And doesn’t draw any attention.

I don’t wear one outside of Mass. But I do wear one to Mass wether it be the Latin Mass or the reg Mass. That in itself takes some getting used to. Especially when going to Church with friends or with my fiance’s family. But I made a decision and try to stick to it.
When I went to my first Latin Mass and I put a veil on my head…it just felt “right”. I desired to wear it to every Mass but wasn’t sure if I was crossing a line and drawing attention to myself. But I spoke with a priest about it and he asked me if I felt called to wear my veil. The answer was easy…yes. So he said, “there’s your answer. You might have people look at you and think you’re trying to be “holier than thou”…so be it. You will also have people, who have had the same thought, be inspired by you. And you will have people wonder what it’s all about.” So with the advice of the priest and on reflecting on scripture (1st Corinthians 11) I now wear a veil while in Church. But it is a personal conviction. I don’t think that everyone has to wear one. The Church does not require it. As long as we obey the Church, we are in good standing.
 
Hello all! I am 28 years old and just started to cover part-full time outside my home. I just feel the Holy Spirit tell me to do so. It feels right for me and my husband doesnt seem to mind, he just asks me to wear my hair “down” sometimes. Wish he is my husband and I respect his wishes on the matter and he deserve the right to see my hair uncovered as the Bible says. I wear a nice panama straw hat to Mass, since the dress code is fairly casual.

For me, mantillias are for more formal occassions, when what I am wearing would “match” the formality of the mantillia.

I just prefer hats to mantillias, as far as head coverings go.
 
I cover full-time.

I like the snoods from garlands of grace, and the scarves from style underground.
I actually utilize the style underground videos quite a bit because her styles don’t smack of any particular religious practice.
 
It seems like this post has kinda slowed down a bit… But honestly I am really wanting to start wearing tichels, I am almost 53 and kinda chubby so this is not a vanity thing. I don’t understand why I am getting this longing. I love my Catholic faith, and I don’t even understand any biblical reason for covering. I don’t want to draw attention to myself at Mass. I am very conflicted. I do not go to a Trinitine Mass, so I don’t know where all this is coming from. I almost feel the Holy Spirit is calling me however I am just so confused. Can anyone help me here? Throughout the last year I have purchased several Tichels from Wrapunzel, I have only wore one once at the Easter Vigil and I had a very real experience where I felt the Child Jesus smile at me telling me he loved how I looked like his Mother. Maybe I’m just nuts??? Someone on here who has this calling, PLEASE Help, I don’t feel a need to do this for any “traditional” reason. Only from my heart. Maybe someone here has some scriptural info that can help me understand why I am being led.
