If you are a woman, do you or anyone you know follow after this scripture?

1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

Since I do not live in 1st century Ephesus, I do not dress as a first century Ephesian noblewoman at Mass.

I dress as a 21st century American woman. And, yes, at Mass I adorn myself with “proper conduct.”

I used to know someone who did that–no jewelry, hair down to the knees. She’d never braid it, though, because that was not “biblical.” Never mind that braided hair nowadays is more a utilitarian hairstyle than a sign of wealth.

This friend and I have no contact anymore, not because of religion, but because of her lack thereof. We got along pretty well when she was a fundamentalist. Not so much anymore now that she is a lesbian living with her “master” while she herself is a “slave,” a lifestyle for which she abandoned her four children and her very kind husband. Please pray for her, I worry about her often.

lumenorientale ~

i am so sorry to hear that, Lumen. i don’t know why people go that route… throwing away Christian principles and God’s blessings for sin and hedonism. i’ll keep her in my prayers.

i personally don’t wear make-up. one reason, to be able to focus less on myself, and not allow chances for vanity to creep in too much. secondly, i don’t much like make-up.

i try to dress modestly and simply, but i wear pants and sneakers and casual clothes. shopping Good Will is a plus.

I am not a woman, but I agree with the verse. Modesty is a lost art in today’s culture, it seems.

Notice what is said by Paul “gold, or pearls or costly array” He is certainly talking about a modesty of spirit. Not being willing to humiliate those poorer then you by showing about in finery that that marks their class and their wealth. No distinction was to be among Christian, not male or female rich or poor .Paul is addressing the fact that deliberate attempt were made by some women to show their status via their hair , their clothes their jewelry.Paul is not talking ankle length here- it’s more of a theological statement by paul-have no differences that will make a fellow Christian uncomfortable.

Truth Seeker,

Will you advice your wife and daughters (if you are a male) to wear modest clothes in general based on that Biblical verse?

One of the tradgedies of modern socuiety is the sexualization of women, young girls in particular. They seem to grow up with the “if you got it then flaunt it” mentality.

And you kniow what, I blame women for it.

Women are allowing marketers to use the image of women to sell, sell, sell and the images they use have become more sexy and titillating. Why aren’t the mums of the world and even the Germaine Greers of the world screaming blue murder at this debauching of the female of our species?

Google the sexualisation of young women

At one time a group of women in my archdiocese in their effort to be scriptural forego all kinds of make-up and jewellery. It was interesting but I wanted to see how far and how long they would go being like that. Sure enough after some time they revert back to wearing make-up and jewellery. Funny that they did not sustain.

It is the heart that counts ,not what’s on the outside. If your heart is pure and you know why you wear what you wear then you are right with God. But if you wear make-up and jewellery to exalt yourself and not the God that is within you, then you are frowned upon by the Lord. Similarly if you are only making a show that you are following the Gospel but your heart is not, then it will not last.

Mk 7
20He went on: "What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean.’ 21For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23All these evils come from inside and make a man ‘unclean.’

I’m a woman…aaaand…I’m a pretty good looking woman…but I’ll be honest, once I had a kid and my priorities MAJORLY changed, so did my emphasis on my appearance. Now its like, everyday, EVERYDAY- no make up…throw my hair up in a bun…jeans, v-neck and tennis shoes…its like whatever…as long as I’m clean and tidy- and warm…I’m happy.

But I have to be HONEST and say that after, like, 2/3 months of straight, goin’ au naterual (<- lol) I feel the need for one day, to primp myself up. Put some color in my face…blow dry the hair out (mines extreeeeemly long so its not time efficient to do it EVERYDAY)…idk you just like to feel more feminine, and pampering yourself definitely makes you feel more feminine…

idk am I off topic here?? is this only pertaining to mass??

Because at mass, even if my make up isnt done and my hairs wrapped up, I’ll still wear my nicest clothes, maybe gold earrings/or necklace…I always thought I should look my best at mass? wear my finest…?

While I don’t agree with showing off at mass I certainly agree with ‘wearing one’s finest’. In the UK in the past there was a thing called ‘Sunday Best’ and, no matter how poor you were, you always had an outfit that was kept for just church. My mother’s family were brought up during and after the last war. They were poor but my grandmother made sure each of her 12 children had clean and decent clothes on. Modesty and decency isn’t just about either being over or under dressed but about making an effort to be clean and well presented. We may not all be ‘duchesses’ but we would not go to be presented to the queen in less than our best - and going to mass is being in the presence of our King.

Do you think that this severe turn about for her was a break down and rebellion against the rules that she believed was expected of her by God? I have known a few fundamentalists who were not able to hold up under the strain of self/family/denomination imposed standards of dress, and behavior and end up completely turning against God. Just curious as to your thoughts.

Yeah, I think that’s the sort of thinking that one always has to apply to instructions within the Bible. While the over all lesson that St. Paul is teaching is ageless, we also have to remember that the specifics that he’s addressing was for a particular group in a particular location. Sometimes I think people get caught up in the details and lose track of the point. In general I think that everyone can agree that in Church we should dress in a fashion that is respectful of each other and the Creator we’ve come to worship.

oh well then i have it all backwards…because Mass is the ONE time I make a direct attempt to, adorn myself- i guess…wear the heels, nice jeans, nice top, jewelry…make up i can go either way but I definitely ‘adorn myself’ more than I do on any other given day…

I also have seen in it in scripture that when women go to mass, or church- sorry I dont know the scripture, but I clearly remember it being read to me several times, that women should wear scarves or…you know, something over their heads? Theres one church down the road (christian of some sort) and ALL the women wear these, hankerchief scarvey things…

so is it that, as time and culture changes, the rules change somewhat too? Cuz Ive heard from growing up ‘always wear your sunday best’ to now, ‘be modest, no jewelry’ - to ‘always wear scarves on your head’…

IS there a specific dress code for this day and age??

I do as I believe do most Christian women, but in the standards of dress and modesty of my own day. In other words, Paul was reminding women not to dress like courtesans or prostitutes–good advice for any time and place.

This thread sure brought back some bad memories. Once when around 14 or 15, I went to a revival meeting with a friend, her relatives asked her to attend and she wanted support. Looking back I believe they were some type of Holiness denomination. They all looked like the woman another poster described, long hair, no makeup, no jewelry, little house on the prairie looking outfits, etc…

I was the only one wearing makeup and a short sleeved dress, it was below the knee however.

That Preacher stopped in the middle of the service and CALLED ME OUT!!! Told me I was going to hell for my clothing and makeup! He quoted 1 Timothy 2:9 as well. People began to gasp and gather around praying (in tongues), etc…he picked on the wrong teen though, . I told him I respected other peoples religion and would not argue unless he continued to attack, He weighed well over 300 pounds, finally I let him have it and said Gluttony was a sin, work through that then call me. I walked out after that. lol

The word modest is also akin to the word moderate. Anyway, I see the “plain style” as also calling attention to themselves. Some people use their plain style just as others use designer clothing, to say…“Hey, Look at me! I’m so holy!!”

To me it means we should make sure the inside is prettier than whats outside. And you can’t create illusions either. A person can ugly up the outside as much as they want but it is not going to make an ugly soul look any better by contrast

I had fun with this verse that is similar when that minister tried to intimidate me,

1 Peter 3:3

3Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of** putting on of apparel**;

I told him if he wants to get literal then I suppose we could all run around naked. 😃
I almost caused a few to faint.

Surely God is not saying clothing is banned, so why would jewelry be banned too?

There are lots of examples in the bible using gold to illustrate a point, if it was wrong it would not be given to us as examples. Here are just a few:

**“Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.” (Jer 2:32)

from story of the Prodigal Son:

“But the father said to his servants, bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand…”

In the Psalms:

Ps 25:12,

“As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.”**

I have seen people get into heated arguments over this stuff to the point of almost coming to blows. TBH sometimes it amazes me that of all the things going on in the world today, this is what they chose to fight against? Why freak on the little divisive things?

Sure, some people have no clue when it comes to their wardrobe and the mirror lies to them before they walk out the door. Just be happy no one wears a bikini to church. Though I have a feeling someone probably has already. 😛

Well, this girl has always been a bit on the quixotic side, if you know what I mean. She’s eccentric, always spinning like a broken compass unable to find it’s true north. Except this time, I’m concerned she’s gone too far. How far can one go before they can’t come back? So my theory is that she takes something to the extreme, then swings like a pendulum to the other side, not out of rebellion so to speak. Just because she’s that way. Sad, I miss her terribly. She’s always added spice to life, but this is just way too much.

As for me, I always believe in dressing modestly, and not being too flashy. But I do throw my hair back into a braid, put on my pants and hiking boots, and traverse the open range with my husband and kids. Maybe not the very model of “the angel of the house,” but I wouldn’t be caught dead in a miniskirt and low cut top.
