I’m a little frustrated because I work at Mardel & they have all these really nice protestant women’s devotional bibles like this:

Why can’t we have anything like this. It just seems like we as Catholics are so limited as far as bibles are concerned. I really wish a Catholic publisher would pick up the pace & give protestants a good & friendly competition. 😃

I want a pretty women’s devotional bible & I want one NOW!!! Ok, I’m done whining now. 🙂

I forgot to add that I sent an e-mail to Ignatius Press to ask them if they plan on coming out with a Women’s dev Bible. I hope & pray they do. :gopray2:
 
I don’t get it - why would you need/want a Bible just for women? :confused: If you want a good study Bible then there are good Catholic Study Bibles out there. If you want one that is “pretty”, buy a cover for it.

I have a gorgeous RSV Bible with a burgundy leather cover and a gold zipper all around three sides. I carry this to Mass with me and I put all sorts of little things in there like prayer cards, and the longer Latin prayers I’ve not totally memorized yet.

Don’t shop at a Christian store if you are looking for Catholic stuff.

Because it looks interesting. It’s a devotional & Bible all in one. Here’s a description of what it contains:

I saw that one but, it’s an NRSV version. I think they use inclusive language. It makes me wonder if it has a feminist slant or not. If you have it could you let me know?

I guess I don’t feel the need for this type of devotional, that’s why I can’t relate to it. But I can certainly see how it may appeal to some people. I would just be absolutely sure you are using something that has a Catholic perspective on women’s roles, and not some liberal feminist agenda. :rolleyes: 🙂

I think a women’s devotional Bible is nice. Women have their own challenges that they face just as men do. It makes it nice to have something that has devotional writing re: motherhood, being a wife, etc. Of course I agree that it does need to be in line with Church teaching. Obviously.

Maybe it’s just me, but I have an Ignatius Bible and all the commentaries that Scott Hahn has done. I enjoy reading them, and I don’t feel as though I have to have a special women’s Bible commentary.

you do understand the only thing different about the Woman’s bible, the men’s bible, the teen bible, the backpack bible, the precious moments bible etc. are the covers and the illustrations, and perhaps a few pages at the beginning or end with references to some verses of interest, or some FAQs. If you want to pay twice as much for the same bible content with a fancy cover, why not shell out for a good Catholic family bible with leather cover, durable binding, acid free paper and color illustrations, list of the popes, and a page for entering baptisms and marriages.

you do understand God speaks to the whole world in the bible, he does not have one message for women, another for men, and a third for teens.

why not get a good study bible for everyday use, and subscribe to the many good Catholic monthly or weekly devotional or study guides on the market. Word Among Us is among the best for this purpose.

Even better would be the Liturgy of the Hours. You get the Church’s Scripture readings for the day, and you get to read the same readings as the rest of the Catholic Church worldwide, even!
It also has devotional readings, but they are Catholic and might be a lot more ancient that the popular women’s protestant writers.
Besides, it’s good enough for all the faithful Sisters of our Church to read every day.

I used to have a Women’s Devotional Bible. In fact, I used to give them as gifts. Nothing compares in greatness to our own Liturgy of the Hours. Now I think it would be great to have a pretty cover on the LOTH books, though. Not a bad idea.
 
Part of the whole protestant machine is capitalism. It’s big business. It’s about selling stuff and making money. It’s about career building. People certainly do want to inspire others to grow closer to the Lord, but there is a gigantic difference between the protestant and Catholic worldview when it comes to selling religion.

For example, the Catholic Church is and always will be the same.
Protestant pastors, churches, and books come and go with the wind. People are always interested in what is in fashion right now. Within five years, the books on the Christian bookstore shelves will be completely different than they are today. The televangelists of today won’t be on tv in 5 more years. It’s a huge pop culture thing.

The Catholic Church really doesn’t need the marketing dept the way the protestants do. We have the writings of the Church Fathers, the encyclicals, the catechism, the different Council documents, and they will always be there. Only we don’t need to market them.

Same thing with Bibles. They are there. But the Catholic Church is just so “un-American” in its thinking, that we don’t have to market them to every subculture we can think of.

I love the liturgy of the hours & the early church fathers. Saying that I want a women’s dev bible geared towards women doesn’t mean I don’t like the LOTH as well. In fact I have an entire bookcase full of Catholic books like LOTH, the early church fathers, books on Mary & the saints, spirituality books, & apologetics books. I LOOOOOVE books(especially Catholic ones). So me wanting another book is really not a new thing for me. I decided to buy the Catholic Women’s Devotional Bible and I’m glad I did. It has thoughts & devotionals geared towards women set up Mon Through Sun all throughout the bible, which I think is great. Does that mean I’m abandoning all of my other Catholic books…nooooo! I just wanted something geared towards women.

I do believe your right about this. I work in the book section at Mardel & you see these authors with tons of books basically writing about the same thing over & over again. It seems like they are writing more for the money than anything. But, that being said I do like the women’s dev bible. Just because it was a protestant’s idea doesn’t mean I have to dislike it. I mean, I like the protestants, even if they don’t like me:p . When I told a few co-workers that I was Catholic you could see the surprise in there eyes. I’m pretty sure one girl thinks I’m not a Christian because I’m Catholic. Silly, silly girl. I’m just waiting for the anti-Catholic comments to really start coming. I’m a little excited about it because there’s soooo many errors in there thinking. Anyway, just wanted to update everyone. Thanks for all of the comments.🙂

I read two Catholic magazines which have daily scriptures AND daily devotional readings:

Magnificat: magnificat.com/english/index.asp

You can find these at most Catholic bookstores, or you can order online.

I love both of them. I read them each morning and evening, and find them a great way to start and close my day with prayer and reflection.
