Women's "jumpers": do you see them as paragons of modesty, or just plain old frumpy?

The only pair of shorts I own are for when I’m painting the house, for when I’m on a ladder. Today I’m working from home and I’m wearing a gray v-neck cotton t-shirt, and a knee length jersey (like a thick t-shirt material) straight navy skirt. I really don’t like anything but skirts and dresses in the summer.Yes, these are just EXAMPLES…lol, but really, they are modest. If you wear one for mass, you can wear a light sweater, buttoned at the top button. I really love the longer ones, they are so fun! I also like skirts…that are about knee length, and pair that with a cute tee shirt. Just a nice diversion from capris, shorts, or jeans.
I think with a little sweater those dresses are perfectly modest!! Cute stuff!!
There is NO reason for a woman to look frumpy because she’s trying to be modest!!

Phew! I’m glad to see that frumpy is not applauded on this site! I see a LOT of jumpers on conservative women…eeeeeee…
But I’m not into the maxi dress trend either. I don’t think it’s flattering on short people, and is generally too hippie dippie for me.

*Yes, some of the really longer ones look a bit Woodstock-ish.
My dd who is 13, always tells me if I look good or not, if something is age appropriate for me or not…so she is my fashion gauge. 
I really like the shorter maxi dresses…or empire waist ones. Comfy, modest, and looks good. *

My grandma used to own two house dresses. She’d wear one every other day and wash it in between. She was pretty poor.
To me, the jumper seems like a house dress. It’s usually of durable fabric. It’s comfortable. And, it’s inexpensive. And, it’s easy to care for jumpers–wash, dry, hang.
I don’t think jumpers are pretty, but neither were house dresses.
You know, to a lot of women, fashionable clothes aren’t really that important. So, to these women, jumpers are really a nice option because of the practicality. And, the fact, that it takes the decision and hassle out of taking care of clothes. All that energy can go to something else.
But, if dressing cute is a priority, I agree that the jumper doesn’t really fit the bill. Also, it’s just impossible to nurse in one. I know that to those who are really sensitive to fashion and dress, the jumper is an abomination.
These fashionistas can’t understand why anyone would not be horrified by the plainness of it.

Keep the tee and swap out the jeans for a cute skirt that goes from the dryer to your waist. No fuss - no muss. Look for jersey, some linens, and some cottons. If the winter, same thing. Look for denim skirts (not too long or they are just as frumpy as a jumper), colored denim washes and dries nice so you don’t have to iron. Cute and feminine - and if you are in a hurry, it’s much faster in the bathroom than a pair of jeans!!
If you need to dress it up, a cute pair of sandals and a matching purse and you are out the door. Easy-peasy!! ~Liza

Speaking in general, I think they are both (modest and frumpy.) Pregnant women look adorable in them and so do little girls in brightly colored tights. It’s not all that flattering on most others. Some women don’t care, though, and more power to them if their husbands don’t object.

What Liza said – I could have said the same thing. You don’t have to spend a lot of money or time, to buy some nice mix and match separates these days. I buy nearly ALL of my tee shirts at Target…they are so cute, and so cheap! Hello…why pay $25 for the same tee at the department store? I buy skirts there too…so cute! Oh that’s hilarious! My daughter and I like watching “What Not to Wear” and today’s ‘victim’ looked just like that! WNTW is a good show. They talk a lot “appropriate” clothing–for the woman’s age, her profession, etc. Some of the “date night” clothes are not anything I would wear, but I will say that for the most part, the women come off that show looking nice–with ‘appropriate’ and modest clothing. The clothes will fit properly (a few things may be tighter than some on here like) and no skin showing that shouldn’t in daytime clothes. And I’ve never seen a jumper in the ‘after’ wardrobe.

Ok - now this totally cracks me up!! I buy all my tees at Target, and most of my skirts! Right, skirts and tops…you can mix and match and have unlimited different outfits…choose them so the colors will go together. Some solids, some patterns…some can be Ts (to wear with jean skirts). And, if a skirt is long enough, you can bend down without exposing yourself… It is the short and straight tight skirts that are the problems with bending down! I find skirts to be cooler (I live in HOT weather) and more comfortable. I save pants for things like camping and hiking or yardwork, etc. You can look feminine, and men appreciate that, even if you are an old, frumpy type of person. A “masculine” appearing female is somewhat of a challenge to a man’s masculinity, I think…whether or not he understands what is going on, he feels challenged on the subliminal level…and he may react you you in a somewhat challenging way, not understanding what is going on. Women should understand this. I used to dress in pants all the time, really…dress feminine. You will notice a difference in the way men react to you (if you are sensitive and pay attention)

My mom lives in NC and wears dresses all the time. She can’t stand to have anything around her waist when it’s hot. If she’s doing yard work or anything where she’s bending over a lot she just wears a pair of short bicycle shorts under her sun dress and she’s good to go.

Oooo… yeah, I like those, especially the first two. You can look good wearing them not pregnant as well as being pregnant without appearing frumpy. I have a couple dresses like the first two since I’ve been pregnant because they have a lot of room for the belly as it grows and are great for the hot weather. I prefer the dresses now that I am bigger in the belly.I just went to the macys website, to look for some styles of what I wear, and what I’m talking about…almost like an updated, modern version of a jumper/sundress. These styles are popular here in Florida…Worn with a nice pair of sparkly flip flops and you have a nice everyday summer outfit, which I think looks modest on me. You be the judge.

When I’m in air-conditioned rooms, I just wear a light sweater with them.In regards to the original photos of the jumpers, I would say those particular ones are pretty frumpy.

Same here. My shorts are gym shorts which I’ve owned since the 9th grade. I work out in them, paint in them or just lounge around in them in the house. Right now, I just wear them underneath the belly with a long t-shirt when I take a walk with the puppy. I prefer capris and skirts most of the time in the summer and almost always skirts throughout the year if I’m going to church or somewhere nice. Although right now, the dress thing is working for me better with my preggers belly.

It’s funny that you say that. When I was younger, I always pictured my grandmother (the ideal SAHM) wearing the 1950s/60s dress, raising 5 wild boys and 1 girl and doing all her cleaning and cooking in a dress. It was so stereotypical of what I’d see in the shows from the time or advertisements. One day I finally asked my grandmother what she wore most of the time around the house. Dress? Are you kidding me? She said, it was just so impractical to wear a dress. She almost always wore jeans and a shirt with sneaks. The pics of her in her dresses, suits, skirts were when she went out or to church - never in the house when she did her work.
