In Orthodox Judaism, we also follow very strict rules of modest dress and behavior (called tznius). The rules are basically the same as for traditional Catholics and Mormons (no sheer fabrics; long sleeves, no low cut tops, no short skirts, etc). The one difference is married women must keep their hair covered at all times.

For some examples of traditionally Jewish modest dress, see:

tznius.com

As you can see, the clothing is not “frumpy”. In my years of involvement with the Orthodox Jewish community, I’ve noticed that the only women who look “frumpy” are the older, heavier-set ones. There is something about being overweight that adds to the “frumpy” appearance (FWIW, thought I’d mention it!)

Maybe its a coincidence, but I just happened to click on this thread as my 8 yr old daughter came out of her room (dojng cleaning for Passover), and asked me to donate one of her tops to the thrift shop.

She said, “It doesn’t fit me modestly anymore, and I don’t want anyone to think I am not modest”.

What with all the kids her age today wearing very revealing clothing with questionable slogans on them, I am SO proud of her for not being like that! 🙂
Well, as to only the older heavier set women looking frumpy, I always say there is a time and a place for everything. Older and heavier set women are beautiful in their own way. And there is nothing more ridiculous looking than an older women who dresses too young and who appears to be always on the quest for eternal youth.

I would appreciate you not putting your Jewish website links on to a Traditional Catholic forum.

Thank you for this link. I am always looking for places to buy skirts and the wrap-around looks nice. 👍
They have some nice head-coverings, too, if you’re interested in those. BTW, how does one properly pronounce “tznius?”

About my links, I had to do that because people kept trying to convert me to Catholicism, and kept asking questions as to “why don’t you believe in Jesus?”

To save myself time and much typing, I just changed my sig line so they can look things up for themselves. If that had not occurred, I wouldn’t have had to do that.

Other than that, do you have a problem with Jews, hence your comment? Jesus and his mother were Jews, after all.

Its pronounced “tsih-NOOS” (that’s the best I can do with transliterating into English!)

I know a woman in her 70’s who dresses very young for her age, but she is young at heart, so who cares! She is a sweet, charitable lady who just overcame colon cancer. I’m glad she is still alive to “look ridiculous”! 🙂

The link to the clothing is very helpful. Clothes are clothes. C’mon!🤷

As an older, heavier-set woman, I say “Amen!” I’d look pretty silly in many of the youthful fashions. But if other ladies “of a certain age” want to dress youthfully, I say let 'em have at it. We have earned the right to dress any way we want as long as our aging lady-bits are appropriately covered! 👍

Can’t agree with you there, sorry. I have bought a couple of things from tznius.com and so have other traditional Catholic women – the customer testimonials will verify that. Ditto for Headcoverings by Devorah headcoverings-by-devorah.com/HEADCOVERINGS.htm We do share a common heritage, after all. And if we want to buy modest clothing, we may well end up buying from the Jewish and LDS vendors unless we have good sewing skills.

Oh, I just noticed the links in the signature… 🤷

Not sure now…I assumed she referred to the links in my sig line!

BTW I just went to Google and did a search on “modest clothing”…this might be the best way to go, since it includes Christian sites too:

Yes, I have a problem with your sig line, and the words before it: “Why Jews don’t accept Jesus”. I am offended just as you would be if I posted this link on a Jewish website:
geocities.com/orthopapism/eens_papal.html

And in my opinion, you are trolling.

Oh yes. I noticed those. Right now I only have a few mantillas, but would like to get some other styles as well. My main problem is finding material that doesn’t slide right off my hair since it is very fine. Pins or clips won’t stay in my hair either!

I used to make all my clothes in high school, so looking at those patterns has made me kinda nostalgic. In fact my first sewing project in Home Ec was a…JUMPER:rotfl:
It was really cute- a v-neck, straight, sleeveless, right-below-the-knee corduroy. When we got done with them, we all wore them to school on the same day. I remember the 7th grade boys being in awe of us for making them.
Hmmm…I might just get a sewing machine again.🙂

My hair is fine and silky, too, unless I have a body wave (which I don’t right now). What I do is this: take a strand at the top near the front (maybe 3" inches behind the hairline) and twist it tightly, lengthwise, for a couple of inches. Anchor the twist to the head with one of those spring-clippie things (I use the kid-sized ones). Then I take a corsage pin and “weave” it in and out of the the lace through the twisted hair. This is the only thing which has worked for me, after experimenting with different types of pins, clips, combs, etc. My hair is so straight that any curl from the twist falls right out within minutes after I undo the clippie. Maybe this will work for you, too? 🙂

P.S. – welcome to CAF!

I’m a stubborn cuss, I know. I should just bow out of this thread but I can’t let this go.

Let me recap AGAIN:

I posted these:

And your response was:

What are these “traditional Catholic standards” you keep referring to? And how is YOUR statement not judgemental? If I consider these dresses modest (and MOST women would), then according to you, I am in opposition to these alleged “standards” and flagrantly immodest? Really, how am I mis-reading you?

Is this part of those “Catholic standards”? Can you provide some documentation that proves the Church has stated that women must shun fashion trends in order to be modest?

This is your personal opinion and preference. You don’t wish to show your arms because you feel it’s immodest. I believe that is clearly a puritanical concept. What could possibly be immodest about a t-shirt or a cap sleeved blouse? Exposing the arm is a temptation? Please…

My friend, YOU have a very narrow view of modesty. Once again, without any qualifiers, you claim all swimsuits are immodest. There are many, many styles of swimsuits available today that would be considered quite modest by most women’s standards, including very faithful Catholic women. Your idea of modesty is the anomaly here.
I won’t put words into laudamus te’s mouth but when she says these dresses are immodest, she is most likely thinking that they are immodest for Holy Mass. I would say myself that they are fairly modest dresses but a light shawl or sweater over them for Holy Mass would be necessary and appropriate as the sleeve lengths are short, particularly for older women. The hem lengths are right on the bubble also, as it is proper that the skirt cover the knees while standing AND sitting.

I will try this. It sounds like it could work for me. Thanks for the welcome.🙂

NO WHERE on this thread were we discussing how one should dress for HOLY MASS. If that was the intention of this thread, it should have been stated.

However, usually when one dresses, one dresses with the mindset of “is this appropriate for Holy Mass?”. At least that is what I do. It is rather contradictory of ones tenet to dress modestly for Holy Mass and then outside of Mass to throw all of that away to fit into the world to gain human respect or out of love of worldliness.

Hmm, not really. I wouldn’t wear clothes for yardwork or exercise to Holy Mass. I also wouldn’t wear a gown appropriate for a formal evening event to Holy Mass.

I agree. Actually most of my favorite people are of the heavier persuasion. They are some of the most sweet, giving friends I have and they are the best cooks. (I am thin (just genetics) and they are always trying to fatten me up.) Many wear jumpers because of fit and comfort for their body type. Personally, I think Florida Evans on the 70’s TV show “Good Times” had the perfect figure of any woman I’ve ever seen.

Hey, you get modest clothing where ever you can find it. I am glad that the poster took the time to place her links here. 🙂
