Word Among Us or Magnificat?

I was just wondering which you might recommend as maybe a little “better” to reach people who have fallen away from their Catholic faith - Magnificat magazine, The Word Among Us, or something else?

I have some family members to whom I would like to send a paid year’s subscription. Who knows if an article or a cover might catch their attention and ignite renewed interest? 🙂
 
I had never seen The Word Among Us until this past week, and I like it very much! It is larger in size than the Magnificat, and has the Order of the Mass - I am not sure if the Magnificat includes that. You really can’t go wrong with either of them. I do like the daily reflections in The Word Among Us. Is there are price difference?
 
I’ve used both. I think “Word Among Us” might be an easier read than the “Magnificat.” I think “Word Among Us” is more oriented to someone with a basic knowledge of Catholicism and more practical articles in it.

So I vote “Word Among Us” for your family. 🙂
 
We get the Word Among Us. We have two subscriptions. It is great for Mass. It has some good articles the reflections are so so. I don’t know if I would be good to send to a lapsed Catholic. I know nothing about the Magnifcat.

The subscription is a good idea perhaps to Catholic Answer?
 
I get them both. And both are very good. Both have the Order of the Mass. The Magnificat is more prayer oriented with both daily and evening prayer for each day, a daily meditation and Saints for each day. The Word Among Us has special articles involving Saints and monthly themes, Lent, Easter, Advent, Christmas, and so on…It has articles explaining the Catholic Faith. It also has inspiring personal life stories involving faith issues. I agree with TheRealJuliane, and also really like the daily reflections in The Word Among Us. And I also agree with her in that you can’t go wrong with either of them. Price for The Word Among Us is $34.95 per year with Mass Readings, $24.95 without. Magnificat is $44.95 per year.

I am familiar with Word Among Us, but had only seen one sample copy of Magnificat. My initial impression was that Magnificat might be a bit more advanced, but wanted to hear from others before ordering.

I think you’re right - I won’t go wrong with either! I greatly appreciate all of the (name removed by moderator)ut I’ve received, and any others that may chime in as well. :cool:
 
Personally, I prefer Magnificat, but The Word Among Us is also solid, and it’s cheaper and more convenient for me, as I have a subscription to it on my Kindle.
 
My parish was giving away copies of The Word Among Us today at mass for a minimal donation, it seems to be solid. I will have to pick up a copy next week.
 
I believe that both of those publications are focused on the Mass readings. If the person isn’t going to Mass, would they really be of interest? I wonder about something like St. Anthony Messenger or some other more general Catholic magazine that has a little about scripture, a little catechesis, a little about prayer, etc. They might be inclined to at least flip through it to see what is there.

The readings are quite generic and even Protestants can get something out of them. I mean, they are Catholic, but a Protestant wouldn’t foam at the mouth reading the content.

Great thoughts to consider! I have two brothers who have fallen away. One of them is very angry and forceful about being “anti” religion. I’m not sure what happened or what experiences he had, but I wouldn’t send a magazine to him - I know it would be a stumbling block and not a help.

Another brother, though, seems to be more of a drifter and I know he won’t be offended or put off. He may just smile, shake his head, and drop it in the trash - but he also might flip through it. I’m certain he won’t be offended or angered and will appreciate the intention.

Another friend, I’m still considering and hadn’t decided yet whether to send him a subscription. Your post offered a great idea and I think I might mention it to him to see how he responds.

You can request a free copy of Magnificat on their website if you first want to have a look at it too, it’s a great magazine I can’t live without it. They also have an App for iPhone/iPad (but can’t use that at Mass yet).
