Words of absolution?

Hi

I know we’ve got some clergy out there that can answer this one for me. What are the actual words of absolution? Generally, after having just spilled my guts, I’m not too focussed on what exactly the priest is saying…to immersed in my relief that my part is over! :o

From the Catechism:

1449
The formula of absolution used in the Latin Church expresses the essential elements of this sacrament: the Father of mercies is the source of all forgiveness. He effects the reconciliation of sinners through the Passover of his Son and the gift of his Spirit, through the prayer and ministry of the Church:
Code: 
      God, the Father of mercies,
      through the death and the resurrection of his Son
      has reconciled the world to himself
      and sent the Holy Spirit among us
      for the forgiveness of sins;
      through the ministry of the Church
      may God give you pardon and peace,
      and I absolve you from your sins
      in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.48

Those are the words of absolution, but they are not the entire prayer of absolution. An absolution with only that line would be valid, but performed illicitly on the part of the priest.
 
The question was what the words of absolution were, not what the whole prayer was.

These are the required words “I absolve you from your sins,
in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Probably not. Usually when one asks the speaks of the words of absolution one is speaking of ‘I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit’. Giving someone the entire prayer accompanying the words of absolution when he merely asked for the words of absolution would be akin to giving someone the entire Roman Canon when he asked merely what the words of consecration were. 🙂
 
sigh…y’all are killing me. Yes, I meant the entire prayer. The part about absolution I usually catch, but the rest of it has always been a bit of a blur.
