So PTO in our field is designed for us to take when we want without question. That is the way it has always been and this is my fourth EMS job in 17 years. Along with talking to others in the EMS field.
I think you misunderstand what PTO is. It means that you can use it for whatever reason you feel like- if you’re sick, if you want to take a vacation, or have a family event, whatever. But that does not mean you can take it whenever you want. A business could not run effectively if everyone was allowed to take PTO whenever they wanted, without having to be approved first.

I think this misunderstanding may be affecting how you view this situation. It seems that you think whenever you have something come up, or whenever you just feel like taking off, your employer has to accommodate you and let you have the time off because it’s PTO, but in reality, that is not how it works.

In any case, I am glad that you will be able to attend your daughter’s award ceremony. It’s great that they were able to find a way to let you go.

I am out before I needed to be, even though they did try to give me a run that would have made me very late, even after my supervisor said I am to be out no later than 4pm. I told them no and I told them what my supervisor said and reminded them why I am going and they said okay I don’t have to do the run.

Although, I do have an angry medic who gave me a hard time because they now have to do the run and said that I could have done it in enough time, but there was no way. He is taking what dispatch said to him about getting there when they can when it was 15 minutes before the pickup time and they are 70 minutes away and when I was told the pickup would be at 2:45 and it was 1pm. There was no way to get the patient early.

I would have gotten out of the hospital at around 3:10, the drive was an hour to our destination with good traffic and no issues, so that would be arriving at 4:10. Would have cleared from the run at 4:25 - 4:30 and travel time to my base is 30 minutes with no traffic. Then I have to fuel the truck and clean it which takes about 30 minutes. Then it’s 20 minutes to where the ceremony is taking place.

There was just no way to get there on time if I had taken that call and may have missed her being presented her award.

I am not worried about being fired because I have my supervisor who called in and said out no later than 4 and it is in an email as well. I have backup.

Put it behind you now if you are out. Not your problem.
Just enjoy the ceremony, and don’t talk to your daughter about work, it’s “her day.”

Forget about the medic. Don’t dwell on what ifs - it’s another example of borrowing trouble.

Enjoy the ceremony.
