I have a male co-worker who is having non-marital ‘physical’ relations with a female, I don’t know the girlfriend. Now I have no control over that, but here is my work problem. He asks to come into an area of my office, where I have access but he does not. I know, because I’ve seen, that he uses the computer(not mine, but still in the area I allow him access to) for internet access, to go to one or more onlien dating sites, and expressing interest in females not the woman with whom he is already dating. I seem to be enabling his actions by allowing him into the area. I am not sure what to do. any advice would be welcome.

Have a confidential talk with your supervisor and address it as an issue of wasting work time, and inappropriate use of company computer equipment?

Depending on what sites he’s visiting, he could also be picking up computer viruses that would cause the system to crash. (Interesting, isn’t it, that it parallels what happens to those who engage in immoral sexual activity IRL - they pick up STDs - nuff said. :sad_yes:)

Your boss will probably thank you for bringing the matter to his/her attention.

I’ve spoken privately to this individual, addressing my spiritual, as well as work related, concerns. He says he agrees, but who can know. My question is, should I let him in if he requests. I don’t make him sign the log book, an infraction on my part. Perhaps I should, or else ask him to ask the boss if its okay.

He doesn’t have access to this area for a reason. If it were OK for anyone to go in there and use the internet, everyone would have the necessary access.

Tell him to go through channels if he wants access to the area, that you will no longer be providing it to him. He can explain to the boss, or HR why he needs the access.

Don’t do what makes you uncomfortable.

As far as having culpability, I don’t think you do. He is using this because you are providing access, but if you start refusing he’ll just go to Starbucks or wherever and do the same thing.

what is your company’s policy toward computer use for non-business purposes? in many companies it is zero tolerance. If you allow him access to the area for other work related reasons make sure the computers are password blocked. if your company is not already doing this find out why, as it makes them extremely vulnerable on many levels. bring this up with your immediate supervisor and your security people.

For my own protection, I will probably explain to him that since he isn’t authorized to my area, he needs to have a work related reason to come in. Barring that, I cannot allow him.
If he takes it personally, that’s not my concern.

You have a moral obligation toward your company. The company makes the rules and if you agree to them, then you have a job and you get paid. If you break the rules that means that you relinquish your contract and you should leave your job or be dismissed.
