Work from home jobs

Hello all! I’m getting married soon (Dec 22nd to be exact :eek: ) and my fh and I agree that when we have children, I should stay at home with them. By that time I will have a research emphisized BS in biology with minors in chemistry and bioinformatics along with a teaching certificate in high school biology, but all of that is pretty much useless for working from home. I’ve got good typing skills and am quite good at what I call “monkey work” because a well trained monkey could do it imo. I’m not crafty at all – the last time I held a needle, I was digging a splinter out of my finger :o . Anyway, does anyone have some suggestions for what I can look into doing to bring in a supplementary income? I’m leery about some of the type-from-home jobs because I just don’t know if they’re legitimate or not.

As my mother’s caregiver, I worked from home as a medical transcriptionist (MT). Since she died, I haven’t been able to do anything emotionally. If the at-home work really paid, I’d be delighted to continue here (at least for the winter months). Howevver, while there are many at-home typing jobs which are not scams, the pay is based on a word-per-line formula they devise (pennies per line), and unless you work late night shift hours and lots of hours, your paycheck may not be rewarding. Plan on spending alot for a course and textbooks that will qualify you and not making it up for quite some time before seeing a profit.

Feel free to PM me for more details or questions. There are good companies out there - and not all MT work. It can be interesting, and I applaud your plan for family planning being HAVING a family !

Wi your educational background, I’m sure that you could tutor high school and possibly college students.

I used to tutor (about 15 years ago) It was only for a few hours a week, but with your specialized background,you could probably find a few students,
 
Possibly, with your degree, you could teach a group of home schoolers (high school level) who’s parents what more enrichment than they feel qualified to give…
I know my home schooled nephews and nieces had classes with other home schoolers for the more complex subjects.
 
I was going to suggest becoming an online tutor. There are a few totally online home school curriculums/schools, and I am sure they would be glad to have you come on board!

DD is also a science major, and her at-home work when kids were smaller was tutoring for HS and college students, including SAT prep, and in science and math.

she also did a lot of research and the mathematical formulae and calculations for the research with which she had helped her profs during grad school, and helped complete the writing of their journal articles and so forth. this led to contracts with the government org. that had funded the original research for more work, all of which she could do at home.

she also had a home based business web hosting, which I am not sure what that is, but involved a couple of computers in her basement. she set up a lot of websites and sold them as well.

she and hubby also had a job, somewhat related to their majors, designing and installing home entertainment and electronics networks in new construction. she did the purchasing and design at home, then they both did the actual installations (with help of in-laws who babysat)

when youngest started pre-school a couple of days a week, she went back to her undergrad college and ran labs for science course, which evidently are a drag for the profs who teach the classroom portion. she is poised for a FT faculty position when the baby starts 1st grade next year. I think the key was she had the foresight to make her contacts and set herself up to do the work before she got her masters (and her son, born the same day her thesis was published).

They’re not.

But what about being a science writer? Freelance writing can easily be done from home.
 
I apologize for not replying to this again for so long, but finals are next week and term papers are due this week, and this is a very hectic time!

I subscribed to the forum you suggested, thereseozi, and it has some really good ideas that some others mentioned here. I’m going to try the online tutor or teacher thing if I can get hired there and see how that goes. I’ll also put myself out in this community and see if any homeschoolers would need my services because I actually know quite a few that homeschool their little guys but not the older ones because they don’t feel comfortable in the subjects.

Maybe this work at home thing will actually work out; I sure hope so…
 
This may sound stupid to some, but a paper route is actually not a bad idea. If you cover a large enough area you can make a few hundred dollars for a few hours of your time, and since you will probably be up that early with a little baby in the house, and DH would probably not be gone for work yet, it just might work! I have been seriously thinking about using that as supplemental income when/if we are blessed with children. And no brains required, which the sleep deprivation induced by a child can tend to take away. 😃
