Hi all! I am curious to hear of your experiences. Does anyone here work from home while raising your children? Do you have any suggestions of legitimate work-from-home opportunities that have been helpful to you and your family?

I guess I’d kind of fall into this category, although for some reason if asked I still automatically say I’m a stay-at-home-mom. I have a 23 month old and an almost four year old and am pregnant with another. DH is in law school right now, which means he hasn’t worked (until today! He’s starting an internship!) for almost a year, which leaves it to me to come up with an income.

I started and run etsy stores, selling the goods that I make. I juggle it by working mostly when the girls are asleep (or at least when my 23 month old is asleep). I added it up earlier this year and I was averaging about 50 hours of work a week. I get a few hours in during nap time, and then would work from 7 at bedtime until whenever I’m too tired to go on, which is often after midnight.

I love crafting and sewing, but I will be excited when he graduates in a couple years and I can hopefully cut back my hours by at least 50%…

Define work from home. Do you mean doing a professional job from home or do you mean a home based business? these are entirely different animals.

I work from home, but I have a full time job for my company. My home is my office and I work a regular office schedule (7–4, 8-5, whatever) and I travel. If we had children, they would have to be in child care.

Having a home based business is something else. In that, you run a business from your home and can work around your children’s schedules. This business could be selling something (like RedSoxWife) or it could be freelancing in an area like copywriting, computer programming, technical writing, etc. You can make your own schedule in many freelance areas.

If you are talking about doing something like freelance, get involved in those groups on LinkedIn. If you are talking about selling products, eBay, etsy, and Amazon are options, and get involved on Mommy blogs.

I’m a full-time college student (so I get financial aid) and I sew and sell things on Etsy.
