Work in your church

Do you do any work for your church or temple? CYO. CCD. Clean the building. Or something else?

While I’m asking, can you please give me some ideas for church events? What does your church or temple do to bring people together? Ham and beans nig (well, not at the temple, but you know what I mean. ) . Picnics. Fairs.

Things we do after Mass for fellowship is to serve Coffee and Donuts the first Sunday of every month, and on the first Friday of every month.

We celebrate those who are having birthdays in that month on the 3rd Friday after Mass by serving coffee and cake and singing Happy Birthday to our honorees.

Spring Luncheon with fashion show.
Rummage sale— great fundraiser and helps those in the community who want good bargains—but is a lot of work!

We have a plant sale in the spring too, when people want to separate their annuals.
Pie sales twice a year (pies sell better than baked goods).

And we have a policy for all our fundraising events that at least 10% goes to charity outside of our parish—usually those that help women and children.

I play music for the choir. Occasionally, I help cleaning, upgrading, or up keeping church’s property.

We have potlucks…we host peace ralleys and attend peace demonstrations. We put together food baskets and get groups to volunteer during the holidays at the “soup kitchens” and give those who are there all year a break to be with their families.

We have yard sales…help sponsor events in the community. Sometimes we hold “picnics in the parks” and offer prepared food to the homeless at a local park…we work with other faith traditions to insure we have enough resources.

We sponsor and attend inter faith workshops with othe faiths(Muslims, Jewish, Bahai, Pagans).

When our church was small and rented a wear down property. Members will need to clean up the toilets, maintain the area, clean up the main auditorium, repairing…etc…etc…mainly hard labour job.

But now we managed to have sufficient fund and moved to a new building so we able to engage 3rd parties to help out in those errands. Therefore after service now we will have fellowship , serve ministry, bible studies.

The Church that I attend has put a great deal emphsis on compassion and moving out of the building and into the community to bring Christ there. We have just finished up Compassion Month where we as a church went out and did whatever we could in the community that was needed. Whether it be hard labor like digging and cleaning ditches or painting nails for women in the nursing home. I was even a part of this last year when my roof needed fixing.

It has really brought to my mind that we christians here in the US are spoiled and becoming much too selfish when we think that working hard, providing a home for our family, and going to church is enough. I commend those who go beyond and work in the communities and help however they can. Whether financially or physically. It’s something I definitely need to work on and know I need God’s help with!

While the Compassion Month (and beyond, we have on the Church’s website a page to go and offer help or post what you need help with) is not so much a ‘fun’ social event it turns out to be very social between you and those you are working with and between you and God.
