I’m in RCIA. Every Catholic friend I know has told me to not say that the Holy Spirit is prompting me to pray for specific things or people, since I haven’t been baptized or confirmed yet. That won’t happen until Easter. I know the Holy Spirit is a person, not our consciousness or feelings. But is it really possible to pray without the help of the Spirit guiding us at whatever stage in faith development we are in?
 
Absolutely! I am a catechist and find so many things, this is a basic one.

We, as people and christians and inquisitors and catechumens and whatever are bound by the sacraments. God is NOT bound by the sacraments, it is His graces for us, so He sorta owns it and can do what He wants with it.

Your prayers are heard. The Holy Spirit is moving within you. It is impossible to get to know God without the Holy Spirit. The only way you are praying now is with the movement of the Spirit within you. The Spirit is within you, just that the formal, sacraments will be administered this Easter Vigil.
 
If the Holy Spirit has moved you to enroll in RCIA you can ask Him to guide you.
Those people are wrong.
