Hi EBC…If it is necessary, yes. If it is work that could wait to another day then it should be left for another day. Very often in today’s economic climate it is necessary for a person to work on Sundays to retain employment and that is certainly necessary. One needs weigh up “necessary/not necessary” for oneself or if in doubt on could consult one’s spiritual director or even Father in Confession.
By and large if it is at all possible Sunday should be looked upon and kept as “my day off in honour of The Lord”. If possible perhaps a bit more time in prayer or spiritual reading…this is not always possible and one’s circumstances will define necessary or not necessary. Hope that helps. You could post into Moral Theology of course.
I know a nurse who works weekends only (works 24 hours, gets paid for 36), and her “Sabbath” is Monday.
But with today’s economy, God wants 24 hours with us. Sometimes it has to be Saturday for me–simply because I’m worn out from the previous week! As long as you sanctify one day a week for God–and attend Mass on that day if unable to do so on Sunday–then that becomes your Sabbath.
