I have to give a presentation this week and I spent all yesterday working on it. I need to do a bit more on it today. I have been to mass and won’t spend too long on it. Is this a grave sin?

If you have fulfilled your Sunday obligation then I don’t see how working on your presentation is sinful.

I don’t see how it is.

I don’t think of studying as work, more of an obligation. I would think this qualifies as an exception since there is a deadline on it. If you feel guilty, mention it in the confessional.

I wrote a blog on Sundays where I quote from JP2, Leo 13, the Code of Canon Law, Aquinas, the Council of Laodicea, and the CCC. If you are interested in looking at this in greater depth than can you might check it out here:

Is going to Mass all we need to do on Sunday?

Short answer to your particular situation, no it wouldn’t be mortally sinful, at least in my opinion, b/c it seems it cannot be avoided and it isn’t really quite work. As Aquinas teaches in the Summa “in the New Law, dispensation is more easily granted than in the Old, in the matter of certain forbidden works, on account of their necessity,”

Have a Happy Advent. 🙂

It’s more of an obligation, so it wouldn’t be sinful. Plus, there are people that like to study and read for fun, so if you’re one of them, then it would count as a hobby, and wouldn’t be considered sinful. 👍
