"Work out your own salvation"?

As a new convert from fundamentalist protestantism (confirmed last Easter), how do I explain the authority of the Catholic Church to my family, when they bring up Philippians 2:12 (“work out your own salvation with fear and trembling”) and Acts 17:11 (“the Bereans…examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true”) to teach that we are to study and interpret the Bible for ourselves, rather than relying on the Church, Tradition, or anyone else to tell us how to be saved or how to organize the church, etc.?
