I know that we are not supposed to work on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. What about Holy Week? I don’t mean Good Friday or Easter, but the other days… what about Holy Thursday?
thanks!
thanks!
I’ve worked every Holy Week, Holy Thursday is on a Thursday, so I’ll be at work, I work Good Friday, and other Holy Days. I know many Catholics who work on Sundays. I’m kind of confused as to why you are asking this?I know that we are not supposed to work on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. What about Holy Week? I don’t mean Good Friday or Easter, but the other days… what about Holy Thursday?

No, the days of Holy Week are not covered under the obligtion to avoid unneccessary work like a Sunday. In spite of its name, Holy Thursday is not a Holy Day of Obligation.I know that we are not supposed to work on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. What about Holy Week? Holy Thursday is not a holy day of obligation so there is no requirement to attend Mass. In addition, I believe that the Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday) liturgies are held in the evenings (the Mass of the Last Supper, washing of the feet, etc.). Good Friday is not a holy day of obligation either and there is no Mass on this day or on Holy Saturday with the exception of the Easter Vigil Mass in the evening. Catholics are encouraged to participate in the Holy Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday) liturgies, but they are not required. Good Friday usually has the solemn Stations of the Cross followed by Confessions and other devotions.
Also, remember that a Catholic is required to receive Holy Communion at least once during Easter. That also implies that in order to receive Holy Communion, one must be in the state of Grace, that is, without mortal sin on one’s soul. Catholics are required to go to confession at least once a year, but that is the BARE minimum. A normal schedule for going to confession would be once a month. Nuns and priests go much more frequently.
The answer lies in the this part of your question.I know that we are not supposed to work on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation.

There is no problem with people missing Mass on Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation because their job requires them to work on those days. Nurses in hospitals, doctors, police, firefighters, paramedics, and many more work on Sundays and Holy Days.I have to work all days of the week and Sundays too sometimes, my off days change, but I always go to mass before work if I work on Sunday. The way things are today, people have to work on Sundays if they want to keep their job. God understands this.![]()
Yup, exactly! There is no problem with people missing Mass on Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation because their job requires them to work on those days. Nurses in hospitals, doctors, police, firefighters, paramedics, and many more work on Sundays and Holy Days.
Of Holy Week only Easter is a Holy Day of Obligation and that’s fulfilled by attending the Easter Vigil or the Easter Day Mass. Thanks for the replies! For myself I try to find work where I don’t have to work on Sunday, I try to keep that as a day of rest. I’m pretty sure I can make it to the liturgies on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter, but I’m working Holy Thursday during the day and I was wondering about this, since I read that Holy Days of Obligation are rest days also…
Holy Days of Obligation are not rest days like Sunday. That’s why parishes often offer Masses in the late evening and at lunch time on Holy Days. My kids go to an orthodox Catholic school, and the school does not close on Holy Days. The students and staff go to Mass. If you can get Good Friday off, great - but there is no obligation to do so (although there are still abstinence requirements.)Thanks for the replies!
