Currently I work for a cable company. Well lets just say that I do outsourcing work for a cable company… For a the last year or so I really haven’t been practicing the faith like I should. But this couple of months, I’ve really decided to get back into it. Lately I’ve been going to mass as much as possible, adoration etc.

Well for whatever reason my mind went to my job and at first what the few compromises I’ve thought I made were. I.e the two times I had to tell cust what our "adult entertainment packages were after they brought it up. Lately though as I thought of it I realized I make a “LOT” more compromises than just that. I for example offer customers free Hbo/Cinemax every day. Cinemax is terrible at night I’m told…I encourage cust to upgrade with packages with Showtime in it…Of course said package also has other stuff and Showtime good movies but.

I am realizing the answer is I need to find another job. But what about until I find another job. I know faith and all of that, but right now financially I’m not in a position where I can just pick up and quit. And if I get another job don’t I owe it to my employer to give them a 2 weeks notice??? Sigh…

On the other hand this will hopefully get me out of my rut of not looking for another job. I’m realizing I could ask to get transferred out of the project I’m in to another project. But I’m told that they aren’t accepting transfers out of my project.

I wouldn’t think that you need to quit. The way you could get in to trouble would be if you tried to sell the additional programming BECAUSE of adult content. This seems to me a lot like selling alcohol or guns, the purchaser knows what they’re getting and is responsible for its use.

Right. I do think though maybe another job where I could be more proud of the work I do would be a good thing…But in every job probably there’s going to be some compromises. My Grandmother told me that I’m not sinning persay but that it wouldn’t hurt to find something else…

My thing though is no Christians work at these kind of places/companies than how will people hear the message too. I can’t talk to the cust’s about God, but I can certainly talk to my coworkers about him…But I guess maybe God is telling me its maybe time to find another position… I’ve held off on it for too long.

I also work for a cable company. The best thing i do is show people how to block out adult content. The other benefit is you never know who you are going to meet, and you could be there inspiration or vice versa. Just hang in there and keep your eyes open, you just might inspire somebody.

Well I work over the phones so my job is to sell products and explain their bills. I have though gotten to take off those channels! Sometimes though with my job I really can help people and maybe even find people to pray for too. I was talking to one girl, and she was telling me how she was looking for a job, please pray for her if I pray. And well I couldn’t say I totally will because our phones are monitored and I know someone who got fired for talking about religion with someone. I have made an effort to pray for her.

Wow, I see a weird irony in your company wanting to to promote lascivious programs, yet at the same time they monitor your customer calls and fire you if religion is discussed.

Your inner radar is on target in wanting to move to another job that does not make you feel compromised. However, I don’t believe you are obligated to quit instantly. These are the decisions of the management, and the choices of the customers, it’s not all your responsibility. Just try to be honest, but also start asking around to see if there are better jobs for you.

When one comes up, ask if you may give 2 weeks notice, if they say, “No, we want you to start now” then I would not think a Cable Company sales position is the type of job you need to give advance notice. Choose the course that gets you into a better job as soon as possible. And God bless you in your search, what a challenge for you. I hope a really nice company hires you because you seem like a really nice guy.

I know exactly how you feel. I worked for a few cable companies over the past 20 years, and they are all the same. The best day I had there was when my last day. I know about the monitoring and the sales. It never ends. One of the things that made me feel better is thinking to myself “I’m glad I got to talk to these people instead of one of the ‘not so honest’ ones”. I never lied. I was honest in a way that, when being monitored, there wasn’t much they could say. I helped the customer as much as I could, and tried to lead them to a path that was best for them. Sometimes the customer doesn’t really know what they want. Your guidance is usually welcome if done correctly and pleasantly. I would look for another job, though. I don’t think you will truely find peace there. If you can give two weeks notice, great. If you can’t, that’s alright too. They probably won’t care either way. So the bottom line is, do what is best for you. Hang in there. Things will happen when you least expect them. God has your back!

I would have to chim in on this one. Giving out free stuff when it isn’t allowed is basically stealing, even if offering to get more sales.

Best thing to due is stay where you are, in this economy… Pray to God, see if you can get moved to another department like CS or somewhere else. If you can’t do that, your going to have to make the hard decisions about what you say or offer to customers. Faith in God is the most important, but you still need your job. Your going to have to catch yourself when you start offering pakages to make sure that you dont fall in that area of sin. Only you and God can figure that out. The rest I do not know. Good luck.

Who said offering Hbo/Cin isn’t allowed? Its a free promotion for 3 months and the company makes it available to me… I’m mainly suppose to offer it TO get sales…

To be frank (and this really not 100% by the book) but something that I’ve been told is the smart thing to do. When you have a very upset cust is I also offer it if the cust is extremely upset/irate and it can be a means of making them a bit happier…I.e Cust has had tons of tech visits left/right… Cust extremely unhappy cust… Look I’m sorry you’ve had so many visits here’s the appropriate adj and if cust makes some more noise… Offer that for the inconvenience…

The company actually benefits yes benefits from this in two ways 1… The Cust is less upset feels a bit more like the company cares without us having to throw more money 2… The cust may eventually get hooked on having those channels and choose to keep it. A lot of times too custs will forget it was only for 3 months and the company makes money that way too because those channels don’t automatically go away after 3 months. Now before you go off on me for that I inform my custs that look if you decide you don’t want to pay for this you’ll have to call and cancel this because you will be charged after 3 months…Some will even say no I don’t want to worry about that…If the custs forget its then not my problem because I was completely clear with them, they agreed to it and its their responsibility.
I’m VERY honest with my cust.

Well actually that part I didn’t see, then again I don’t pay attention to when they are legally allowed to give it out to get sales. Forgive me, you put me in my place for that one, and that one I deserved, I am sorry. I will not go off on you, at all. I work in the same type of customer service, but in food, and I understand about a grumpy customer. Unfortunity, I also have to deal with the people who just want free food, and will do, and make any noise, hookup, and do anything they can to get free food. It sucks. 😦

Again please forgive me.
