Ok so there is a job going locally as a young person’s facilitator in a local youth project/club. Here are some details:
Job Duties:
Facilitate the involvement of young people in the development of the services [name of club]
Work as part of a team to deliver a ‘one stop shop’ for young people aged 11-25 years
Develop the entertainment at weekend nights
Full description available from Jobs and Benefit office
Qualifications / Experience:
Experience of working with young people, experience of providing information and advice to young people, experience of delivering youth work programmes and advocating on behalf of young people
I know that this centre gives out information and advice to youth which is not consistent with Catholic faith and morals. They give out info on contraception and homosexuality and also have a clinic for free contraceptives for youth.

Can a devout Catholic have any place in such a centre, or should I just forget it? I can imagine being severely restricted and compromised and having to go along with all sorts of immoral things, or lose your job.

They couldn’t pay me enough money to work in a joint like that. Unless I was totally in charge, in which case I’d clean the place up!

What is more important to you, the job or your faith? Only you can answer this.

My faith, of course. I think it is a bit unfair though that they would discriminate against Christians… though I guess it is fair enough since we would do the same if a homosexual campaigner wanted a job in a Catholic school! I say would, perhaps I should say should!

In virtually all western societies Christians not to mention catholics are minorities in places where liberal humanism is the quasi religion of choice. Liberal humanism tolerates indeed celebrates many atcivities Christians have difficulty with.

Rather than moaning about discrimination we need to ask ourselves do we want this job. It is simply silly to suppose that publically funded or indeed any such job will be set up to appeal to members of a minority counter cultural religion ( Christianity ) in the face of acceptance by the culture of choice ( liberal humanism ).

Yes, you can apply for and take a job there.

No, you cannot promote contraception, homosexuality, or other immoral things. You can refrain from giving out any such information and only support information and activities consistent with your religious beliefs.

You are not obligated to tell them your religion when interviewing. You can ask for accomodation based on your religious beliefs if you are offered the job. If they rescind the offer, you might have a case for discrimination should you decide to pursue it.

Does that mean I would have to remove from the place any bad leaflets? Or does it mean one would simply not promote such leaflets? Might one promote good Catholic leaflets instead?

I would imagine they would not permit one to hand out good leaflets. Nor would they permit one to remove their own approved leaflets and materials.

It sounds like quite a battle to be involved with, and it could end in a nice court case! Sounds like a lot of bother!

They might ask about any religion in interview, and about your willingness to hand out info on these immoral things.

I don’t know if working in a place where you are giving out contraceptives and advice is necessarily promoting contraceptives, if that is an issue for you.

The reality is this: people will have sex. If they don’t have contraception to use, they’re likely to spread disease and can do a lot of harm. This can harm more than just the two involved as they can go on to be transmitted to, for arguments sake, a Catholic marrying one of the original couple who doesn’t know about their new partner having the disease etc. and who hasn’t had pre-martial sex. So that person can suffer purely because of the selfishness of their partner. Say, however, that a youth worker provided that person with contraceptives and they used it, it could avoid the problem.

I’m honestly not too sure on my own thoughts about this. I find it very hard to subscribe to contraceptives being a black-and-white sin issue. I think that, my own views aside though, it makes sense that a lot of suffering can be avoided if the people who are going to have sex ANYWAY can have sex in a way that may prevent the contraction and spreading of disease.
