I would like to begin keeping a list of alternative Catholic forums to replace this one due to the impending shutdown of CAF on December 31, 2020.

There are no forums that are near substitutes for CAF in terms of the size or volume of posts. This is actually a good thing IMHO. Thus, what follows is a list of smaller forums for your consideration. Take some time to consider supporting one or more of them.

Please ensure that additions to this list are in communion with the Holy See. There are many traditional-minded forums that, while not officially sedevacantist, do permit or encourage discussion of whether Pope Francis is legitimate; I intend to omit these from this list. This is not because I think less of them, but because they are qualitatively different from the forums that are on the list.

These are the ones I am aware of thus far.

Catholic Common Sense - https://catholiccommonsense.freeforums.net
Catholic Community Forum - www.catholicforum.com
Phatmass - Phatmass Catholic Forum and Message Board (this one is older than CAF itself)
St. Isidrore’s Lounge - private and invite only, PM @Tis_Bearself for link.
Byzcath Forum - http://www.byzcath.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=cfrm (Eastern Christianity focused inclusive of Orthodoxy.)
Coming Home Network - https://community.chnetwork.org (private)

I am not personally familiar with the following but have added them after research
Catholic Tapatalk Group - Catholic Discussion - A place where Catholics and Non-Catholics can talk. Great conversation!
Association of Hebrew Catholics - Forums – Association of Hebrew Catholics

Mary, with Catholic common sense can you tell me what’s the difference between the forum user name and the name? Can they be the same thing? I put in one thing on the first page for user name and then on continue it put a ‘Forum user name”. It was very confusing!

I put the same thing on both and it worked for me. I think it is supposed to give you the option of having a display name different than your handle.

Thank you! Sounds good. Between having to change work passwords for several different platforms every couple of months I try to keep things as simple as possible. If only one name works that’s better than trying to come up with two. Thanks again!

I’ll note that I’m collecting emails for notifications for if and when some behind the scenes discussions produce something.

Or, for that matter, if something unrelated pops up after CAF, well, pops off . . .

You can pm me an email. They will be kept private and used in either individual emails or as a bcc (but you are, of course, welcome to create a new email for this)

our current thinking would focus more on the Catholic and information/theology/praxis (so don’t be surpised if you see me more on the bear’s socially focused catholic site 😜)

But as I’ve said elsewhere, we need multiple vessels, and need to be realistic about the fact that most will fail (and if I could tell you which of the many would succeed and which will fail, I’d be spending my time moving my retirement funds to angel investing instead of growth funds . . .)

Thanks for including Phatmass. I’m dUSt, the phounder. I’ve thought about closing down many times but then figured out it only takes about $850/year to keep the website up. That’s like 15 people giving $5/month. We’ve been able to stay alive since 2001!

The Phatmass Phorum is not dead yet! We feel happy… WE FEEL HAPPYYYyyyyyy clunk

Looking around I have found an active and well populated site called
Cathinfo.com

However, this advertises itself as a

Traditional Catholic Forum
A message board for SSPX, Resistance and other Traditional
Catholics to discuss news and matters pertaining to the Catholic Faith.

Yes, that is one of the semi-kinda-anti-Pope Francis sites that I deliberately left off the list. I am not a fan of Pope Francis’s approach to evangelization, but he is the Pope, and communion with the Holy See is not negotiable if you’re going to call yourself Catholic.

It is sad that with the end of CAF, these forums will likely be bigger than the ones in communion with Rome. But as I keep saying, small is the new normal. I wasn’t the first to say it.

I heard from someone that SSPX was in communion with the Pope? They claim that the Pope gave the SSPX the faculties for hearing confessions and lifted their excommunications?

  1. The SSPX bishops and priests pray for Pope Francis at every Mass, Benediction, Rosary etc. 2) In 2009 Pope Benedict XVI lifted the excommunications against the SSPX bishops. 3) In 2016 Pope Francis gave ordinary jurisdiction to SSPX priests for hearing confessions and performing marriages.
IOW, you’re right. 👍👍

Not exactly.

The SSPX isn’t anti Pope Francis, but check out the site. The owner, “Matthew”, sure as heck is extremist and much of what is posted and approved by him is indeed anti Pope Francis, anti OF, etc. BIG difference, as you noted, between a site which may have a clear preference for a rite but acknowledges the validity of another rite.

So you were right to exclude that site, but in error thinking it needed to be excluded because it was SSPX. It needs to be excluded because the owner himself is not following the SSPX’s own teaching but rather his own ‘extremest’ views.

And that’s why I didn’t consider it for inclusion. Not because it was SSPX (it really isn’t)

What other forums on the Internet are similar to CAF? Evangelization
I don’t know if it’s been mentioned but christianforums.com has a Catholic section, “One Bread, One Body”. I haven’t visited it for quite awhile but even the “General Theology” forum, which is for all Christians, can be good and educative even while challenging. It’s amazing how many differing opinions exist out there, especially when under the influence of the doctrine of Sola Scriptura.
