Are we allowed to work on unnecessary work January 1 this year in the US. It is a holy day but the obligation to attend mass is removed so I am confused if we are still bound under the “normal” rules for Sunday and Holy days to avoid unnecessary work, shopping etc.

Thanks

Solemnities are days of feast and celebration. If you must work, work. If you can afford to have a fun day, do so!

There are actually ten feast days given in the Latin Canon Law. Many are suppressed which means there is no obligation on that day (neither Mass nor abstaining from work).

CIC
Canon 1246 §2 However, the Episcopal Conference may, with the prior approval of the Apostolic See, suppress certain holydays of obligation or transfer them to a Sunday.

I don’t know what country you are in, but in the US, we would never let work interfere with our football Bowl Games.
