Working on Sunday

I was wondering if it’s ok to work on Sunday afternoons. I own a business and I could really use the extra revenue that would come from being open for an additional day. I would still go to mass and my prayer meetings in the morning, and then I would open up at about 2p.m. Would this be dishonoring the sabbath?

I am not sure what are legitimate reasons. There are no lives at stake, and I would prefer to rest on Sundays, but I also have debts to pay.

Having been in a similiar position of more debts than money (I had a fire and lost everything with no insurance) I was a wreck and literally nearly killed myself working.

Please be careful and pray hard about it. I will pray for you asking our Blessed Mother to give you peace. Remember the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabbath. Remember Jesus did some great miracles on the sabbath and got a lot of critisism for it too. You might be a miracle for someone else.

In 1846 Our Lady appeared to two children at La Salette. One of the messages of Our Lady of La Salette was a dire warning that by not going to Mass on Sunday, not keeping holy the Lord’s Day, it would bring a nation to ruin.

“On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass; they are also to abstain from those labors and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord’s Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body”. Canon 1247 - Code of Canon Law

I just listened to a tape by Scott Hahn where he talked a little about this. May I suggest that you take this to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

When I was out of work last year I was offered work that included working on Sunday. We were really starting to hurt financially at the time but although I had a moment’s hesitation I decided to stick to my convictions and turned down the job.

Three hours later I received a phone call (Friday pm) from someone else ho had interviewed me, asking if I could start on Monday. I believe that God provides if you put your trust in Him. My experiences of life have led me to believe this.

God had a lesson to teach me through being out of work. He taught me that we were living too materially and needed to get back to basics and a simpler way of living. I learned that there are a lot of things I might enjoy at the moment that I don’t really need.

In fact, when my family look back, the most treasured moments were those we spent hanging out together doing things that didn’t cost a cent. That is what binds us together as a family. Those are the memories I remember best about my own parents.

Small businesses tend to close between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. in the evening. Small business owners like to set their hours based on their own convenience. And this was probably fine forty years ago when most women didn’t work outside of the home.

For anyone who works during the day, it is almost impossible to patronize a small business. One reason the chain stores have done so well is that they have hours that are convenient for their customers.

If small businesses would stay open until at least 7:00 in the evening, they would be providing a great service and enable more people to patronize them.

My suggestion is to have a day off on Sunday and stay open later the rest of the week.

In my case, I am already open as late as necessary (7:30p.m.) since I work with children parents don’t really want them out after that. So, opening on Sunday would make a difference. Not that I really want to work seven days a week.

It occurs to me that while I don’t work on Sunday; I shop on Sunday, eat out on Sunday, etc. So, I am patronizing business that don’t honor the Lord’s day and I am encouraging them to stay open. Isn’t this a bit hypocritical?

You are right. I try not to shop etc on Sunday, I have got it down to only essential items that I forgot on Saturday such as bread and milk.

My grandfather, a non-Catholic, used to be up to midnight some Saturdays finishing off chores (chopping wood, bringing in coal etc) so that he didn’t have to do anything on Sunday except feed the hens.
