I’m a 19 year old Catholic who suffers from scrupulosity. One of the things I am struggling with is weight lifting. When I started weight lifting when I was 12, I was immediately hooked on. I aimed to lift as often as a could (about 5 times a week) with a balance of cardio. Weight lifting became one of my main passions in life. I love working out hard because I love the endorphin release and the feeling of being sore the day after a good workout. One day though I heard a person give a talk on his conversion story on how he did tennis and weightlifting, but that he did weight lifting just to look good.
That really pricked me conscience. It made me wonder if I was doing weight lifting out of vanity. I struggle with an anorexic disorder of thinking that I’m getting fat, so I do a lot of situps the day after I eat a lot to make sure it doesn’t convert to flab and I compare myself to other self-consciously to make sure that I don’t look “out of shape”.I’m worried now that every time I do weight lifting or situps I’m dishonoring God because I feel that I’m doing it out of vanity and focus on self rather than on glorifying him. I’ve tried giving up weight lifting and doing just running, but my body feels like it deteriates without weight lifting and I lose weight when I don’t lift (which is what my parents don’t want) I also feel that I can’t focus without the chemical release I get from lifting. Should I still give up weight lifting entirely? Is it a sin to want to picture yourself looking “fitter” when you are working out? What steps can I take to purify my workouts?
