I have a question. Is it bad to not work while in college? One of my friends is telling me that I have got to so I can have job history to put on job apps after I graduate. I dont have any because I have mostly just worked with family (iam 22) I thought about just focusing on school but now I am worried that if I dont work while in school that i wont be able to get a job later

If you feel it will be too much during the school year, get a job over the summer or just something part time. When my husband was in college he worked over the summers and Christmas vacation.
Of course, my dad worked his way through college and med. school, so he would tell you to go get a job!!!

When I was in university I did factory work in my summers off but during the school year I only worked 1 year. Partially because I made enough in the summer and lived cheap so I could manage, and partially because I liked being able to schedule my classes for times that suited me best when possible. I know what you mean- I grew up on a farm so I didn’t really have any “real” work experience until I was 18 or 19. But in a way it is a disadvantage to lack it on your resume. Do you do any internship(s), co-op with your program? If you don’t it might not hurt to get something, if not for the money for the experience/references, etc

Everyone’s situation is unique.
I did not work during college… I focused on my school work during the week, and would drive 2 hrs home on the weekends to spend time with my boyfriend/fiance/husband (which progressed throughout college).
I got a job right out of college. 🤷
In this economy it may be an advantage to have a job for your resume… but it’s not always necessary.

I have a pretty sweet deal. I work part time for my father, who owns a small business. I don’t have set hours, I’m on an “as long as the work gets done” basis.

There is a negative correlation with working and grades, according to my Mom who worked in a university counseling center. If you do not have to work during the school year, don’t. Get your experience doing summer internships. That and good grades should get you a job.

God blress you,

Ruthie

I work as a waitress during the school year, which helps with expenses (I take care of food, books and spending money, and am making myself responsible for rent, should an RA position not be in the cards for me). I find it helps, because it makes me balance my time a lot more. I’ve become a lot more diligent about my school work and more careful about how I spend time and money. It also helps, so that I can get internships over the summer.

I think it depends on the situation. Work experience is important but so are good grades. And that’s what summers are for. For me, I have to work, it’s a financial necessity and I’m trying to take more control of my own life. For others it may be different.

It’s funny, the year I did not work, my grades plummeted. This year, I work and I ended up getting better grades. But I think it’s because I do need to do something with my time. And I’m not premed anymore so that could be a factor.
